Bernard Hopkins: 'I would never fight Andre Ward'

Different styles, different fighters, but how do you guys feel about Hopkins willingness to fight Kovalev, but not Ward? Not trying to be a D rider, but how does that translate to Ward's greatness?

    Here are the articles

    http://www. ea st s i de boxing.com/2013/an dre-ward-open-to-fight-against-bernard-hopkins/

WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO***8217;s) and his promoter Dan Goosen are both open to a fight against IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KO***8217;s) if he***8217;s game.

Ward says he***8217;d like to take on the younger fighters, but he***8217;d take the fight against the 48-year-old Hopkins. His promoter Goosen thinks it would be an excellent fight and believes they could make it for pay-per-view.

    Ward said via ********* ***8220;I don***8217;t have a desire to call Bernard out, but I am a fighter. If it makes financial sense, I***8217;ll step to the plate. I***8217;m more interested in fighting guys from my era, but at the same time I don***8217;t back down from fights.***8221;

It would be very surprising if Hopkins were to take this fight because he***8217;s been pretty good at picking out his opponents, and this would be a very bad match-up or him, especially with him about to turn 49. This isn***8217;t Kelly Pavlik, Karo Murat or Tavroris Cloud that Hopkins would be facing. Ward actually has game and would make Hopkins miserable unless he eased up on nhim and decided to carry him for 12 rounds out of respect. I don***8217;t see Hopkins taking this fight ever. Ward is too good and Hopkins is way too old now.

Ward wants to take on the big-named younger fighters or even the guys that are a little older than him, but he***8217;s not had much luck in landing any of the big names other than Chad Dawson since the Super Six tournament ended. Ward had expressed interest in facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Gennady Golovkin, Carl Froch, and Mikkel Kessler, but none of those guys have been interested enough to face Ward.

Next week, Ward will be defending his title against unbeaten Edwin Rodriguez (26-0, 14 KO***8217;s) in a fight televised by HBO at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California. This is far from the big fight that Ward was looking for, but HBO likes the idea of him fighting Rodriguez. There are some that think this will be a competitive fight, but don***8217;t bet on that happening. Rodriguez is too wide with his punches and he can***8217;t fight on the inside. Ward will dominate Rodriguez and make this an easy fight.

Here's article on Hopkins refusing to fight Ward for any amount of money

Citing his respect for Andre Ward, Bernard Hopkins says there’s no amount of money big enough to get the two of them into a ring together.

The only thing Hop doesn't want to fight Andre is Hop doesn't see a reason to beat the guy up.

If you don't understand it, you don't understand Hop's mentality..

I don't know about that, and I have great respect for both guys as top fighters - one of them a living legend, but I couldn't put together a fight that would be more of a foul-filled huggy butt-fest if I tried.

You really think he'd beat Andre Ward up?

Lol people always got to find something to hate about. Dude is fighting Kovalev. Far more dangerous than Ward. Sure, maybe Ward can out-Hopkins Hopkins at this stage and maybe get a close decision victory. Kovalev on the other hand had the power and ability to really, legitimately hurt Hopkins.

What's so absurd about that? Ward basically fights the same style as an old Hopkins. I don't quite understand the Andre Ward is invincible around NSB. He beat Froch and Kessler. His toughest fight was against Sakio Bika. Its no gimme Ward beats any of the top three at 175.

He's not "beating up" Andre Ward. That's laughable. Could he win a close fight? Yeah, sure. But he's not beating him up.

And for the record I think Ward at this stage of their careers wins clearly.

I love this fight and commend Hopkins for taking it.

This thread was more about asking the question: "Is Hopkins not fighting Ward a token of Ward's prominence". This is in no way a shot at Hopkins; I know better than that.

But I will tell you, if we're being honest, that I've never been a favorite of Hopkins fighting style (excessing holding, headbutting, fouls, etc), although is it very effective; make no mistake.

But now that Hopkins is fighting Kovalev, there's absolutely nothing anyone can say about his greatness and fearlessness.
