Comments Thread For: Frankie Gavin Sees Nothing Intimidating About Bundu

On 28 Jun 2013, Frankie Gavin 19-0 (12 KOs) showed us that he is the best in Britain at 10st 7lbs. His seven round dissection of the then unbeaten Denton Vassell was one of the performances of the year at domestic level that saw him retain his British welterweight title and claim his outclassed opponent’s Commonwealth strap in the process. It was 21 minutes of near perfection. Everything came together in one night.

In the three fights since then we have seen a Frankie Gavin that has struggled for motivation even though he was levels above David Barnes, Bradley Pryce and Sacky Shikukutu when defeating them. Gavin needs a threat, the fear factor and Leonard Bundu presents both for the 28-year-old.

No one sees anything intimidating about Bundu. Gavin shouldn't be fighting the Bundu's of the world 5 years into his pro career, especially since he was a decorated amateur.

He is promoted by Warren after all. Might see Gavin vs Brook, Thurman, Maidana etc in about 10 years time

I don't see the problem with this fight. Bundu might not be the biggest or youngest fighter out there but is undefeated and has been European champion for several fights and is easily Gavin's biggest test to date solid fight to me with both being southpaws so it will be a interesting one. Plus Bundu looked good against Lee Purdy in a war on skysports so there is some marketability in picking Bundu.

Bundu was no slouch neither in the Amateur's, he won a bronze medal at the world championships and got eliminated losing a close decision to a Cuban called Juan Hernández Sierra who is a 4 x world champion.

It's not the fight I have a problem with. It is indeed Gavin's biggest test to date. I just think it's somewhat sad that Bundu is a step up in comp for a former amateur world champ who is 5 years into his pro career.

Bundu was a hell of an amateur himself, he boxed in the olympics beating Daniel Geale & narrowly lost to the great Juan Hernandez Sierra (tremendous Cuban amateur)
Don't let his record fool you thinking its padded, he didn't turn pro until well in his 30s, Bundu has a serious pedigree and is undefeated for a reason. He maybe old but he is real tough, in shape & he can box. His K.O ratio is deceptive too, he has some pop.

              Gavin better not overlook him.
