Comments Thread For: Arum on Pacquiao-Algieri, Donaire, Shiming Eliminator

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is upbeat about the title defense of WBO welterweight champion and “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao against undefeated junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri in Macau on November 22.

Arum told the BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard/Viva Sports that everything was going excellently and that Algieri would be in New York until he leaves for China to begin the promotional tour alongside Pacquiao.

When this fight was first announced, I was like, pfffff Pac destroys this dude. I've never heard of him. Then I realized I was thinking like an idiot and started to research this Algieri.

So far….this guy has all the tools to give Pac hell (his movement, his jab) . I don't know Algieri well enough for a final assessment yet but I'm trying to figure out why Arum would set up such a fight.

I've only seen Algieri fight Peralta so far (Sadly, I missed the Provod fight and HBO isn't offering it On Demand….freakin' bummer ) but on paper, Algieri gives Pac trouble.

Pac better not take Algieri lightly. Everyone and their mother knows that Algieri is going to train his a** off for this fight.

          You know, you're probably right.

The more I get to know Algieri, the more I see a serious scrap on Pac's hands.

I really don't see why anyone would think that Pac has even the slightest chance of losing this fight. Algeri may have the measurables, but his level of competition is too weak to take him seriously. I didn't think he would get the decision against Ruslan either, because usually judges don't give the decision to the runners. I think Terence Crawford or Mikey Garcia will give Manny better competition than Algeri, especially at a CW of 144.

I agree with Crawford for sure that dude is a beast.

Great great point about Algieri's competition. I may be overcomplicating it for myself. But his lack of competition makes it hard to get a bead on him. The only recognizable person that Algieri has fought is Provod (and I still haven't seen it, which sucks) and maybe Arnaoutis (die hard fans would probably recognize him). I'm going to go read the analysis thread again. haha

Why are people giving Algieri a chance? Because anything can happen in boxing. Upsets and torch-passing moments happen all the time.

If Pacquiao is the Pacquiao of 5-6 years ago, he beats anybody in the world (Mayweather included). Right now? He's been a tad vulnerable.
