Maidana's a great guy, the fact that he love guns and fights rough just makes him more likeable. It'd be different if he were often beating up girls or forcing opponents to wear particular boxing equipment (say, gloves).

Ellerbe not allowing Maidana to where gloves with no padding around the knuckle is the same as Naazim Richardson not allowing Margarito to where hand wraps with plaster of paris in them. And if you think being a gun toting thug and not respecting the rules and sportsmanship etiquette of the sports makes him more likeable then you shouldn't have any problem with anything Mayweather says or does. Because you would be a huge hypocrite if so.
