Of cource a kickboxer would demolish a boxer. They can load up on power leg kicks since a boxer can't defend against them and you only need handful to land so that the boxer can no longer move or punch very well anymore. Once the boxer tries to go inside the kickboxer would just sink in the Thai Clinch and deliver knees to the body and face, again a boxer would be defenseless against that.

A pure boxer gets demolished, but a boxer with years of defensive training can be very succesfull. Look at Mike Bernardo destroying almost every K-1 legend using nothing but his powerful fists(and defense against kicks and knees, although even he was sometimes demolished by their legs). Look at Zambidi, Masato and other Dutch fighters using mostly boxing to win their K-1 fights.

If you've ever been involved in a brawl you will know that using your legs for striking effectively can help loads. I've only been involved in a few which i did not start but i could not avoid either.

Been boxing for 6 years roughly and had a few fights, some savate practicioner picked a fight with me downtwn accusing me of hitting on his girl, he hit me with a good kick to the head that wobbled the **** out of me before some bouncers stopped us...it's pretty hard to avoid kicks when you mostly train to avoid striking from the arms

Another guy that was a pretty well known kickboxer over here picked a fight with me but i dropped him in a few seconds with a left hook and that was it. Street fights are bull**** and they mostly depend on who gets off first

A kickboxer is a boxer. If you are a boxer and you get trained by me to throw a front kick, side kick and round house kick you are a kickboxer. Kickboxing was invented to allow karateka to fight full contact with rules. Kickboxing actually destroyed karate...but thats another story.

NOW....Thai boxing, Bando, Savate are styles of fighting that are different than boxing with kicks. Thai Boxing involves different techniques and thai fighters really only use a very effective roundkick along with knees elbows, head, and straight punching. Bando is similar with a little more focus on periods of intense activity. Burmese fighters using Bando were considered very effective martial artists. Savate is French fighting and involves whipping kicks along with many western boxing techniques.

But kickboxing is boxing! as a matter of fact in the old days there was a rule that a minimum of like 5 kicks had to be thrown a round. The guys would usually quickly throw five kicks in the wind and box the entire rest of the round...why? because they were boxers.

ha yeah Savate guys are quick...probably nailed you with a hooking kick right? You can't block that type of kick well because it goes around your block you have to know your angles.

Buakaw won a split decision against Virgil Kalakoda, a boxing journeyman who managed to compete with the best in K-1.

The talent pool in kickboxing is very shallow.

At same level, no, they get smashed.

Punching is far superior to kicking and stuff and the time spent training for proper boxing is time better spent than mastering kicks.

Kicks are longer range and unless they land to the head or in the guts they are nowhere near as damaging on average as a correctly placed punch. A checked leg kick is bearable.

Kicks are longer and stronger but a big punch to the right spot sill still cause more damage than a low kick.

Thing is punches are quicker, the proper boxers for that reason develop far quicker reaction times.

And when someone kicks they are straight away off balance which spells doom in real boxing. Which is why high kicks might look devastating but are not really good form over all.

Please note also that most kick boxing events are stopped on a straight right punch!

The punching (the MAIN tool of even a kickboxer) is not very highly developed, even a bit ******y!

And look at the kickboxing champion of the world and then look at Mike Tyson. The kickboxing HW champ doesn't even LOOK like he could beat Mike.

On a lower level, we used to spar with the ammy kickboxers sometimes and they were useless.

And of course the talent pool is far lower than boxing. Which will always remain the most extensive and professional of the fighting sports over MMA and Kickboxing.

I'd say kickboxing as u could kick to their leg or groin before they're in punching range
But if ur looking to take up either to be better at beating people up in the street you're likely to get stabbed or shot

If you want to learn for self defense then the first thing you need to understand is that no single art/practice/sport will be a be-all-end-all for street fighting.

In a street fight anything goes, and if you aren't prepared to do any and everything in a street fight you are at a disadvantage period.

Take any self defense class or martial art you want just always keep that in mind. They are sports and arts for a reason, they are best appreciated and used to the maximum within the contraints of it's own art form/sport.

For example if I get into a fight, which is like never, I would use boxing aspects because I have been boxing for so long and most haven't, but I would also use things I learned in the military, I would draw from things I learned while taking wing chun, and I would draw things I learned straight up on the streets, growing up poor, ignorant, and surrounded by gang violence.

There is no single, right answer, you do what you can with what you know, and what you are willing to lose, and that's it.

Self defense classes are largely just for your peace of mind, and confidence, it doesn't matter what you may know, if you aren't mentally prepared to deal with something like someone having total disregard for who you are and where you are that is stabbing you repeatedly with a knife or broken bottle, it's not going to matter what training you have, just because you know a few moves doesn't mean you have the stomach to do violence if the time comes.
