Garcia's verbal assault reminded me so much of Nas's infamous takedown of Jay-Z. (song: Ether if you care to youtube it..)
Garcia's joke(or critique) all the funnier for how true it was- just like Nas.
What Nas skewered so perfectly was how fantastical and outlandish Jay-Z had gotten, just like Money May.
When Nas goes, 'Were you abused as a child, scared to smile, they called you ugly?'
That's Nas getting at Jay-Z the flawed person, the flawed man, so TRANSPARENTLY not as confident as he looks on his album covers. Every M.C. in the world wanted to have the song catalog, the albums, the money, the critical accolades, the EVERYTHING that Jay-Z had. But Nas pointed out simple stuff, just like Garcia. Garcia doesn't sound emotional or angry when he says that his kids and him have watched that fight together. He sounds believable. Does Floyd? Does Floyd even care if anyone believes the words he's saying?
'in 88 you was getting chased through your building. Calling my crib when I ain't even give you my numbers.'
Here Garcia can't match the inside story, the intimate, 'you and me were brothers' thing that Nas hits in his song. But Garcia still sound like he's telling the truth like Nasty Nas when he says, 'Here in L.A., we don't need PPV. You and me can just go for walk.' Like Nas, doesn't need to exaggerate. He can just say **** plainly. Not blown out of proportion and distorted like Floyd. That's why Nas's retort was never answered by Jay-Z(really). He was just saying true stuff. You used to call my house and I'd never given my number to you. And now you want to talk a bunch of ****?
'You a fan, a phony, a fake, a *****, a Stan. I still whip your ass, you thirty-six in a karate class.'
Is this not like Garcia and Maidana's whole vibe? Nas is like Garcia and Chino because his following was hip-hop fans, not casual fans(nothing wrong with being a casual fan, unless you want to win a war of words.... then it's not such a good thing.) When Garcia says, 'You and me can go for a little walk...' or Chino says, 'What I learned is he's not that good...' these words hit the ground like, 'THOOOOOOM. CRAAASSH' giant trees smashing buildings. These guys EARNED the stuff the hard way. Chino taking **** decisions against Kotelnik, beating a freaking, prime Ortiz, getting illegally held by Alexander. Not to say he shouldn't have gotten 'bad' decisions. BAD DECISIONS make you more BAD ASS. Getting a BAD DECISION makes you a million times better than some guy who always had the judges on his side. Garcia, the same thing. His fights are badass. When I see Garcia speak, I see superimposed over him the beatings he took as De La Hoya's sparring partner. Words are going to have lot more weight coming from the underdog.
And how odd that Mayweather would indirectly or directly bring up Garcia the fighter or Corrales the fighter. Just like Jay-Z casually listing his own name among other better M.C.s(not saying that Jay-Z isn't great. It just sounds ****** to bring up other names like that.) It sounds idiotic for Floyd to bring up Chico Corrales when Corrales is in, arguably, the greatest fight of all time and is in many, many youtubable fights that are actually worth watching over and over again. So bizarre that Mayweather could toss off Diego's name like him and Diego have anything in common besides a fight. Not that Corrales or Garcia are better fighters than Floyd(actually, totally debatable...) or that Garcia could beat Floyd in a street fight(also totally debatable..) but it just sounds ****** of Floyd to bring up Corrales and Garcia the way he did. Like he's not really all that familiar with how beloved those two are. Especially Chico. Floyd sounds like he's never watched a great fight on youtube before. Has he ever watched Castillo vs. Corrales? Does he have any idea that THAT is what fights are SUPPOSED to be like? That fans have been hoping for years and years that he'd be in a fight like that one?
In the end, most people would choose Jay-Z's or Floyd's life over Nas's, Garcia's or Maidana's. Jay-Z, the gorgeous wife, the artistic success and the money. Floyd, the money, the success and... the money. Meaning, to most people, Floyd and Jay-Z win the argument no matter how ****** their words sound...
and, I guess that means Floyd wins.
Unless he gets his ass beat on Sept. 13th.
