To me being a boxing newbie it seems like most cubans are gate keepers like they have enough to be good but never be on the elite level

they are good but the style they use is more technical and defensive. Rigo is a great fighter and a true master of the sport.

They are, Their style is for the Amatuer world. They are trained from children to win in the amatuer system not the pros. Yes they can beat people and get to high praises but they always seem to fall short cause they dont have the grit that comes with fighting like a pro, Why? because even when they turn pro they dont try to be more of a pro they cause they are good amatuers and can win without but then when they reach the top and everyone pretty even out skill wise now that where you need the intangibles that the cubans seem to lack.

Dont get me wrong their are exception but but as a general rule I stand behind what I said.

No they are generally very very skillful and nowadays are finding it hard to either be on TV or get decisions for reasons of both style and the nature of the sport's odd and questionable often horrible judging. There's a good Cuban involved heavyweight fight coming up though with Mike Perez if you want to start following them.

Also lots of Cubans don't get off the island and even after winning Olympic gold they are stuck in Cuba doin odd jobs for bad pay and treatment.

This is true too. I think Rigondeaux is the best current boxer America or abroad tho. I think this mainly only applies for some of the more modern fighters when you look at those old videos of people like Kid Chocolate... the real one, and even some of the fighters from the 80s they were going out slugging. And laying that jaw on the line.

But like you said there's exceptions everywhere so there's that too.

Foreigners don't tend to get decisions in the States generally and Cubans are rarely house fighters.

cuban boxing school : swim w/o getting wet

this is how they don't get the popular vote during the announcement of the winner. they are being labeled as a runner and a boring fighter.. though pbf himself nowadays have this type of style. if pbf started this type of style early, he wouldn't be the pbf of today..

Imagine if all of them were allowed to fight anywhere without having to defect.......we would see even more talent and they would make an even greater impact.
