I was standing there watching people ranging in age from teens to late thirties hitting pads, shadow boxing etc and looking fantastic, very intimidated. My reply was, "Uhh... not really, I just want to do this for fitness..." For a month after that was mostly hill running, skipping, bodyweight circuits, etc. Also, the first day I turned up, I wore a tracksuit with shorts underneath, took my pants off when I arrived. People were like "wtf, you have to get a shower here, can't be leaving like a sweaty, dirty so and so." Like it was an unwritten rule you had to get a shower at the gym and leave looking fresh.
Lol sounds like some Rocky ****

I remember my first time hitting the mitts. I have a tendency of dropping my lead hand (left) so the coach smacked me and I was in shock. I was like wtf? One half of me wanted to punch him back the other half was like "I thought we were only doing combos?"

Good thing I don't have Khan's or TS's chin or I wouldve been out not 6 minutes but probably 30.

I'm right handed but feel more confident in the southpaw stance for some reason.

I am also left footed and my left eye is my dominant eye. Anyone else a right handed southpaw.

For the past 25 years, I've been hanging out in and working out in boxing gyms around the US, from small community gyms to private not-for-profits to well-known pro gyms, like where I work out now (Wild Card in Hollywood). It's been my experience that boxing gyms universally have some of the nicest, most open people you'll ever meet. Sure, there are badasses, but no one really acts that way because there's no reason -- everyone understands who can kick who's ass.

Just a couple of things I would keep in mind: Don't act like you know what you're doing if you don't (or even if you do). Don't spar with someone you don't know. In fact, don't even spar for the first several months you're there. And finally, you may think you can hit hard, but I assure you there are guys who hit **much, much** harder and/or won't be affected much by your "hard" punches.

Just go and be honest that you're new and you'll be surprised how many people will help you.

And probably did it all wrong and looked even more ****** cause I was too busy thinking about what other people might've thought. But every time I looked around nobody was looking so Idk what my problem was. I eventually got over it tho.

The main problem about going to a gym, whether it's a boxing gym or for weight training, is having the balls to go in. Basically, if you can find someone to give you a little push and go in with you, it should be easier.
the first time i went to the gym i laughed throughout the whole shadow boxing period. i couldnt help but think everyone looked so dumb including myself. but as time went on it got serious.

I did laugh too. But I was laughing at my bro who was in there with me. Laughing was like a way of forgetting how dumb I felt. After shadowboxing I would jump on the heavy bag and would always think to myself, why cant I feel this good while I shadowbox?

You ever seen Me, Myself and Irene? When Jim Carrey is trying to fight the 3 dudes (I think it was) and he was throwing those punches in the air while coming at them? Remember how ****** he looked? That's exactly how I felt.
