What is it like going to a boxing gym for the first time?

There's a boxing gym next to where I live, roughly 7min walk away.

I want to go because I'm really into fitness but I haven't gotten around to doing it.

Are there a lot of hard asses there?

I would like to spar one day for the fun of it but obviously as I have no experience I'd need to work my way up.

I'm mainly worried about losing my marbles from punches and potential damage, this is the only thing keeping me from looking into fighting as a hobby.

I'd also be worried about hurting people as I've always been able to pack a punch.

There might be a lot of cupboard doors and mantle pieces there that could knock you out for 6 minutes.

I would steer clear from them if I was you. There are a lot of counters there. You're probably going to KO yourself again.

              It's ummm.... Idk.

Definitely not hard asses. Especially to the one I went to. People will try to help. Also, you might feel self conscious cause you might think you're looking ****** doing something and people might be watching you. But don't, just do your thing and concentrate. It will be better when doing what you're supposed to be doing. Chances are nobody is watching you anyway cause they're too busy doing their own thing. My main problem when I first got there was shadow boxing. I felt soooooo ******.

Just remember, those same guys were in your shoes at one point. I'm just speaking from personal experience so you might be different.

Im usually the guy that doesn't give two ****s about what people think but when I got in that ring and started shadowboxing, I felt so dumb. And probably did it all wrong and looked even more ****** cause I was too busy thinking about what other people might've thought. But every time I looked around nobody was looking so Idk what my problem was. I eventually got over it tho.

The main problem about going to a gym, whether it's a boxing gym or for weight training, is having the balls to go in. Basically, if you can find someone to give you a little push and go in with you, it should be easier.

I didn't hit a mitt or anything for the first month of going to a local gym. There's this really old, rugged looking trainer who takes all new comers under his wing, came up to me, first thing anyone ever said to me, "So, you want to be a fighter?" I was standing there watching people ranging in age from teens to late thirties hitting pads, shadow boxing etc and looking fantastic, very intimidated. My reply was, "Uhh... not really, I just want to do this for fitness..." For a month after that was mostly hill running, skipping, bodyweight circuits, etc. Also, the first day I turned up, I wore a tracksuit with shorts underneath, took my pants off when I arrived. People were like "wtf, you have to get a shower here, can't be leaving like a sweaty, dirty so and so." Like it was an unwritten rule you had to get a shower at the gym and leave looking fresh.
