This part is off though. Northern Michigan University used to give scholarships to amateur boxers back in 80's/90's. Mayweather is a product of that program. They went to school and trained/fought out of the Olympic Training Center in Marquette.

I recommend amateur boxing to any youth who has the grit.

People say that the head gear doesnt really protect you. Im 19 yrs old and in college. I have no prior boxing training but id say that im very physically fit as ive played football and ran track back in highschool, and i also started wrestling as club sport in college. Do you think i can make it at such a late starting age. I just really love boxing its litterally all i think about lmao. Any advice?
      Welcome!

Yes the headgear helps. Don't get crazy and spar without one. You could suffer some serious damage without it. I wouldn't over do the sparring. I did it every Saturday and felt like I got hit by a mac truck every Sunday.

You're not too old. Just be smart. I fought amateur and got out after a few fights because I knew I wasn't going to make it a career. I just wanted to experience the sport. ya know? Know your limits. Sparring will help you find yours.

Go to a legit boxing gym and hire a legit boxing coach. He will teach you the fundamentals.

Run your bum off. Even 3 rounds are tough.

I'm obsessed too. You found the right place bud. Everybody I've encountered around here is nuts over it too. "Garcia's Dad" warned me when I came in, so I'll do the same for you. You will sometimes be hit with some seriously negative comments, don't blow a gasket and keep it above the belt line.

Have fun and be safe in your boxing journey!

Amateur boxing was built to teach young fighters technique, and how to land punches.

Which is why the scoring is based solely on punches landed, And not about hard punches or knock downs.

but that doesn't mean you can't get KTFO.

          !
If you want to be any good than spar every chance that you get. That Mac Truck feeling is something that you work through the very next day and the day after that, etc. Until you become the 'Mac Truck'.

I dig the way you added to the analogy. I understand what you mean, sparring is really the best way to actually learn to box, imo.

It's just that, I usually tried to get in all my sparring in one day (usually 2 or 3 matches) then recover. I rarely would spar during the week and if I did it, it would only be one day, one match, and after my workout. Those were interesting. Having that "mac truck" feeling all week really ******. haha

I hope this kid has a great experience.

Find a good gym with a solid reputation.. I have seem a lot of coaches grab guys off the street and a month later they are fighting in the amateurs with no real clue as to what they are doing.. The fighter takes a beating, gets disheartened and quits the sport..

A good coach will drill home the fundamentals and have you gain a lot of experience sparring before you start competing. And a good coach will match you evenly once you do start competing

Amateurs compared to pros, it's a lot faster paced and shorter.. There is hardly any feeling out process in an amateur fight, you gotta go hard and fast or the other guy will

Not only the headgear doesn't diminish the impact of the punches, some studies show it actually increases it. And yes you can get KO'd with headgear and 12Oz gloves on, I don't mean just going down for the count or being staggered and the ref waves it off, I mean getting put to sleep. Happened at my gym.
