Comments Thread For: Canelo's Dangerous Gamble Pays Off in Las Vegas

By Mark Whicker - It was more vanilla than cinnamon, that’s for sure. But thyme (and time) is still on the side of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Just don’t expect the ****y discussions about Saturday night’s split decision at MGM Grand Garden Arena to subside anytime soon.

Canelo chased Erislandy Lara around the ring for 12 rounds and threw enough windy misses to supply power to most of Clark County for a week.

But since Lara didn’t get off his unicycle long enough to mount an offense, Canelo came out the winner, much to the relief of Golden Boy chief Oscar De La Hoya.

Judge Levi Martinez gave Canelo a 117-111 nod, hard to digest in a bout where most of the rounds should have gone to arbitration. Jerry Roth favored Lara, 115-113, and Dave Moretti gave it to Alvarez by the same score.

“Levi Martinez should be looked into,” Lara said.

A vast majority of the crowd of 14,239 exploded when Canelo’s winning score was announced. Ronnie Shields, Lara’s trainer, waved his hand dismissively at all concerned, and Lara, incredulous, was held up against the turnbuckle by two of his handlers.

“There’s an old saying that if you want to make love, you need a partner,” Canelo said later. “If you want to fight you need a guy who wants to fight.” [Click Here To Read More]

Lara is being delusional about this. Immediate rematch? Who wants that? The fight could have gone either way, Canelo winning wasn't a "disgrace" by any means, and the fight wasn't entertaining enough to warrant a sequel.

****** Canelo didn't read the script. He was supposed to play the "overhyped bum who gets outclassed and embarrassed by the master boxer". He turned a lot of people's world upside down last night.

Canelo still doesn't have a good win to his name, just 2 gift decisions.

what was Levi Martinez of NM watching, giving alvarez 9 rounds...This Eddie Munster look alike is very inconsistent looking back a few years of his bouts....it's as he's watching but not seeing...

Lara didn't do what he said he was gonna do and ran too much in the middle of the fight but he started off and finished the fight good IMO. No way Canelo won 7 rds, let alone 9. Smh

When I heard the 117-111 score, like Shields, I figured there was no way it would be in Canelo's favor.

A close fight but Lara has to realize he needs to do a bit more to win. He has no one to blame but himself.

You can't win with a jab once in awhile all while backing up. He had his chance. Lara is a puss.
