  • New To Boxing

    Hi,

I am a sophmore in High School. I am 16 years old, and I am interested in starting boxing. So what exactly do I need to do? Any specific type of lessons to take or anything? If anybody knows anything or like resources on the Web it would be greatly appreciated. Is there like a beginner class? Also, would boxing help me defend myself in real life situations?

    Thanks

how could learning how to hit harder, move faster, avoid getting hit and learning how to throw good combinations NOT help you in real life situations?

Boxing is a sport, dont take boxing if u are jus gonna use it in the streets. But if u wana learn to defenf urself thats fine, but dont go startin fights. Boxing is a really tough sport and not for every1. I suggest you give it a try if ur interested, maybe ull love it and maybe u wont. I dunno where u live or what gym u go to so icant really give u info. But where im from thea wasnt no classes, jus a bunch of hungry ricans trainin and after u got for a while the trainer started talkin to me and teachin me stuff. But im sure some gyms have classes. Boxing would help u in real situations if u are good at boxing, but just by taking boxing doesnt mean ur the toughest, not evry1 that boxes is good. I suggest u find out where a local gym near u is and check it out. Go there for a little while and see how u like it. Boxing is a good sport to keep u outa trouble and keep u in shape. Good luck and get back to me tell me how ur makin out.

So I should just go to a nearby boxing gym or something and see if I like it? Have you guys ever gotten your teeth damaged or nose broken boxing?

If your worried about that, this sport is not for you. When Thomas Hearns first stepped into a boxing gym Manny Stewart put him in with a someone who was more experienced than he was and Hearns got his nose broken. You know what he did? He straightened his nose out and got back into the fight. If your worried about your looks don't even tred these waters.

If you are conscious of your looks but are still interested in boxing for defence purposes (and I guess fitness purposes also?) then you should attend some boxing gyms, see what they have to offer, perhaps pick up on the workouts they do, and go home and copy them. This way you are conditioning yourself, without receiving "unnecessary" damage...

I don't care that much, just that I just got my braces off it would suck to have to get them back on or something ya know.

Its hard though because I can't find any local gyms

EDIT: I wouldn't be able to go home and copy these techniques because I don't have any equipment
