90% of boxing is being in shape. if you find a real gym. (Not one of these softy let us wear 10,000 pounds of equipment gyms and everyone hold your punches and after 1 round of sparring we stop and watch movies and build a campfire gyms) then you will be fine. Will it help you in the streets hell yes... As a student of the game I can definitely tell you that one of the strenghts of boxing is that you train your body physically to punch and to absorb punishment. You will also learn to throw punches properly in order to maximize your power etc. If you have ever studied any fighting arts you will know that guys on the street do not know how to punch (Wide looping haymakers, worse than Samuel Peter, no defense, and horrible stances and footwork) (Once you box for a few months you will easily exploit such things and make short work of many guys in the streets) and do not train to fight therefore after a minute or so they are winded. I was able to ddispatch a couple of guys twice my size because no matter how strong they may have been, after a minute or two they were winded and trust me after hitting the heavy bag for xx amount of time and sparring for 10 4 minute rounds or whatever your trainers may decide, trust me you will be more than ready to handle most people in the street. (Assuming you are not outnumbered 12 to 1 or someone has a pipe or something.) find yourself a real gym.. one that doesnt have Air conditioning and cool aid after your training sessions. One of the back alley ones that has no ac, is under a soup kitchen and brings about the toughest of people. Trust me man you will more than be ready to handle yourself out in the streets.

Oh man I want to box so bad nowit sounds like fun.
The hardest part is finding a gym though..
How far do you guys have to drive to get to a gym? And how often do you go a week? I want to get in shape more than ever, be able to defend myself, and also box for the fun of it and sport and see if I like it. I think there is a gym in another city, and there is also a kickboxing one. I don't know about kickboxing though
