Comments Thread For: Cotto's Adviser: Door is Open For Canelo, Mayweather

After capturing the WBC middleweight title last month, Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) is once again in the mix to face the biggest names in boxing. Cotto's legal adviser, Gaby Peñagarícano, says everything is still on course for a planned return in December. The dates of December 7 and December 14 are being kicked around. The venue is unknown, but New York's Madison Square Garden in quite possible.

Why is Top Rank saying Cotto won't fight Canelo in December? Why not? There's an awful lot of time between July and December, so why can't the fight happen? Because Bob Arum is going to try and milk the cow with TR opponents (Bradley) before he puts Cotto at risk of losing. It's a smart plan, but you can't say Canelo is ducking Cotto if Canelo decides to fight Mayweather next May instead of Cotto. Canelo (GBP) offered Cotto $10 million, but Cotto turned it down to fight Sergio. What comes around...

Cotto is tied to HBO. I don't see a Mayweather fight happening. And Canelo has his own issues to deal with this month. But if he wins then a December match against Cotto would be wonderful. Based on what Arum has been saying though, I don't see that happening.

Cotto is fighting one of the guys team Cotto mentioned and when they want to, not a deesicion for TR to make he is a free agent who preferes to involve TR but doesn't have to.

I read somewhere else that no, they wouldnt consider him bcuz he brings nothing, iand its true, i mean after the not so great ppv numbers with cotto/martinez i think against lara they would do worse, and martinez is better known, maybe a rematch with pacquiao, i think since cotto is at end of career he needs to make the most money and lara isnt it. But no, they said they wouldnt

Free agency can be very good for Cotto if he does not commit to HBO. I can see a bout with Quillen in NYC doing very nice at the gate. I know GGG would love to fight Cotto in NYC, but that can be a very risky fight for Cotto. If he is sticking to TR's stable, I can't imagine who he would fight.
