I think i was the only few that gave Maidana a real shot, unlike the majority who wrote him off, the rematch is interesting because it depends on Floyds adjustments. Chinos faints really threw Floyd off, but besides doing a good job trapping Floyd, he had a dumb game plan IMO, he went to the corner and told his father Chino can't keep this up, I think he let Chino attack to tire him and then try to really unload that didn't work. Also Floyd said him self he was surprised Chino had a real good jab which offsets Floyds offense. But Chino also mentioned to Robert a couple things he saw in Floyd and he said he was expecting something better than what Floyd was. Regarding the glove controversy, Chino still said he was surprised Floyd took his shots well. I don't think he could KO Floyd no matter the gloves. Robert had a good game plan besides telling him to be dirty, which was he mentioned before the fight when studying the Ortiz fight, even doe Ortiz wasn't landing it still gave the perception like Floyd was in trouble or connecting to sway the judges to give him the round.

Floyd via split decision. Maidana earned a rematch and only Castillo did that, so thats saying something.
I think the experience of being in there with a slickster like floyd should help him figure floyd out a lot better. If he makes the proper adjustments, He'll be a little more efficient and less wild, which should help his endurance. Maidana did run out of steam though, so I say its nip and tuck through 9, with floyd stepping it up in the championship rounds and eking out a close one.

Come in lighter. Adding on nearly 20 pounds in water weight deteriorates stamina and sharpness. And those are two things needed to fight a guy like Floyd.
Throw the left hook a lot more. That thing can do damage.. And it can be cranked tight or delivered long. When Floyd is in shoulder roll stance...stop trying to defeat the shoulder roll all the time and test his guard on the right side of that stance as well. Maidana expended a lot of his energy trying to land the right over the shoulder roll on the ropes.
Don't cry wolf. Feints are nice, but May adapts. He will catch you looking at him trying to get him to flinch and pop you with an uppercut or right hand. I noticed Maidana fell in love with his feints but didn't back up the feints with the violent pugilism they seem to threaten... In some of May's best rounds that is. His feints were effective but overused.
Utilize your jab as more than just a ring generalship or defensive tool.i noticed Maidana often used his jab with no intent of landing, just to position Floyd on the ropes. Also, he utilized the jab to stall Floyd's momentum. But He rarely threw in combination off of the jab... He needs more of that. In fact, in my opinion, he should rarely throw that jab without having intent to land or without a combination. That makes his feints he DOES use more potent and respected.
Dont fear Floyd at any range. Beat him up on the ropes.. Sure.. Be rough... Why not. But if he takes it on the outside remember you have a right hand that can accentuate those jabs quite well. Maidana has long, mid, and close range in his arsenal. This concept that he is only a close range fighter is false. He can deliver longe range bombs. But he is MOST deadly at mid range. In the trench but with enough room to get full leverage.
Which segues to my next.... Don't smother yourself. If he has Floyd cornered on the ropes and he's covered up,.. Take a half step back to cultivate better leverage on his punches,
There's more but that's Just off the top

I can easily see Maidana turning in a better performance in the rematch. And I'm very appreciative of his first performance... But this developing idea that Maidana can't do any better reminds me of the same myopic mentality that had guys predicting a 120-108 fight in the first one.

If Maidana had a chance to wear those punchers gloves. Those liver shots and hooks to the body would have made a big difference. Evident when Floyd couldnt even stand up before the ring anouncement after the 12th round.
If it was those punchers gloves Maidana can wear on the 2nd fight. Floyd won't see the light of day. The thing is Maidana won't be allowed to get his wishes, hence there will be no fight.
Chicken floyd won't allow punchers gloves in Maidana's hands.Last edited by Spoon23; 07-06-2014, 10:31 PM.
