And, by the way, the only Gamboa fight that came close to "disappointing" before the Rios fiasco was Ponce De Leon. Yuri fought in an way that was very unusual for him. Before that fight, Gamboa was one of the most electrifying boxers in the sport.

Ironically, the version of Rios Abril beat might've made Yuri an overnight star. Gamboa's career will always be tied to the decisions he made in those days.
If I remember correctly, his fight vs. Salido was deemed disappointing by most people (HBO commentators, Boxing writers, some Boxing fans). They expected him to go to war with Salido and then knock him out. They underrated the Mexican. But Gamboa boxed a lot more than usual in that fight, and it was a good idea, because few boxers can beat Salido in a slugfest. I enjoyed that fight, and Gamboa fought very well, but the truth is that his performance received mixed and negative reviews.

As you said we don't know what was going on behind the scenes, but we do know that Bob wanted to make Rios vs. Gamboa and I think I know why (see my previous post).

As for the outcome of Gamboa vs. Rios: Abril was a natural Lightweight, Gamboa was asked to jump three weight divisions (Rios was a Light Welterweight). It was a suicide mission.

I don't recall how the Salido fight was received at the time, but I thought it was very good. I don't see how anyone could not have at least enjoyed it. The Ponce fight was a letdown.

As far as I know, Yuri asked for the Rios fight. What happened afterwards is history.

I thought Rios would stop Gamboa before seeing him in the Abril fight. Not to diminish Richar's performance (it was masterful), but the Brandon he fought was a zombie. Rios was moving up to 140 before the Gamboa fight was offered, then he accepted one more fight at 135. This was before Yuri started using his dad, Carlos, as his "trainer." Top Rank had even hired Emanuel Steward (RIP) to train him for the Rios fight. If Gamboa had showed up for that fight...who knows?

Salinas is a good boxer but nothing special. He did well enough against Quigg for me to want to watch. I thought Quigg deserved the decision but the fight was close. Hopefully he learns to finish.

It was my first time watching Salinas fight, and I was hopeful he would impress. As I recall, I thought Quigg probably should've gotten the nod. The fight was close, with Yoandris taking the early rounds and Scott taking over in the second-half. Not everybody's the next Rigo or Gamboa.
