CARSON, Calif. - In a collision of two highly-skilled, exciting southpaw featherweights in the co-feature on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, international amateur standout Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO), of Ukraine, won a hard-fought 12-round majority decision over previously undefeated yet untested Gary Russell Jr. (24-1, 14 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Md., to capture the vacant WBO world 126-pound crown.

There were no knockdowns in the epic showdown between Lomachenko and Russell for the vacant WBO title that Lomachenko won by the scores of 116-112 twice and 114-114. Lomachenko, 396-1 as an amateur, was a two-time Olympic Games gold medalist (2008, 2012) who fought and lost for a world title in his pro debut. [Click Here To Read More]

These pics don't do any justice to the way the fight actually went, if anything it seems like the judge that WRONGFULLY had it draw posted these pics when it was Cristal clear Lomachenko had won the fight. Lomachenko definitely won, but Russell did show a lot of heart & now one questions if it's that Russell żcould take shots & handle punishment the way he did, or is it that Lomachenko doesn't have a lot power in his punches? Cause Lomachenko does have 6 fights in that "WBL"(or what ever) & they all were won by decision. Gotta see if Russell fights a guy with known KO power behind his punches(like Verdejo) & see if he gets hit with clean hard shots & depending how he handles those shots then one could tell.

This Lomochenko kid has skills! I'm more impressed with his smartness inside the ring! It was beautiful the way he broke down Russell Jr! Its like he had seen Russell's style many times before! Russell needs to go back to the drawing board because it will take more than pity pat shots to beat Lomochenko but he did show some heart!

Lamachenko fought for a world title in his second pro fight..
Great win for Lama, Russell will be back. He def has some skills, but he could not run down Lama with his hit and move style.

Lomachenko is definitely being rushed and was put into a fight with a PED user by a desperate promoter. I'd give Lomachenko a few more fights this year and then build up for a Donaire clash. Rigo is already acting like a diva when it comes to moving up in weight..kind of turning into another Andre Ward aka a diva who doesn't sell and has a boring style...but down the road Rigo v. Lomachenko at 126-130 is another huge fight...

Lomachenko asked to be rushed. He wouldntve signed with Top Rank if they didnt put him in title fights as soon as possible and it paid off, he now holds a belt.

Loma's ability to go from offense to defense was very impressive. The dude is very complete and hard to hit.

Rigo is small for 122...He has no business at 126, imo

Top Rank needs to build up a Walters-Lomachenko fight. I'd really like to see this fight in about a year. Maybe let Lomachenko fight that Russian in Garcia's gym to unify belts. And set up Walters-Donaire.

Great fight. Lomachenko is a bad azz, Russell Jr is no punk, he's got the skill and the heart to shine on. I think we're gonna get some great fights from both warriors against the bigger names.
