Comments Thread For: WBC Praises Cotto's Win, Plans Formal Title Presentation

The boxing world continues to revel in the throwback performance offered by Miguel Cotto in his middleweight championship winning effort over Sergio Martinez. The Puerto Rican superstar capped an incredible evening on June 7 at Madison Square Garden, his home away from home and where he’s sold more tickets than any other fighter in the 21st century.

With the win, Cotto became the first fighter in the history of Puerto Rico to win titles in four weight classes, and also the island’s first to claim the World lineal middleweight crown. In addition to claiming true championship status, Cotto also acquired the World Boxing Council (WBC) title, a win that garnered overwhelming praise from those in the Mexico City-based sanctioning body.

I created a thread about this same topic.. Puerto Ricans very rarely win the WBC belt A.K.A The Green Belt or the Mexican Belt..I believe the last person to rock it before "Swift" was Camacho back in the 80's..Never the less we got that b1tch now..Good for Cotto and Puerto Rico..We needed some good news for a change..

A couple more after Camacho, but yeah, not very many at all in past 25 years.
Trinidad "beat" DLH in their unified welterweight title fight in '99, was for WBC and IBF titles. Carlos De Leon was WBC cruiserweight champ in the late 1980s/early 1990s

Mexican fighters on the other hand have no problem winning belts from the Puerto Rico-based WBO.
