Cotto v Mayweather 2 for the MW title would be the biggest embarrassment to the sport. Absolute laughable disgrace if it happens, but knowing floyd it probably will...at a catchweight too!
He beat Baldomir, after Baldomir upset Judah in 06
Retired then came back and beat Mosley for his Lineal title.
Here's how the linage goes starting with the SRL era
Wilfred Benitez(1979)
Sugar Ray Leonard(1979-1980)
Roberto Duran (1980)
Sugar Ray Leonard (1980-1982; Vacated title )
Donald Curry (1985-1986)
Lloyd Honeyghan (1986-1987)
Jorge Vaca (1987-1988)
Lloyd Honeyghan (1988-1989)
Marlon Starling (1989-1990)
Maurice Blocker (1990-1991)
Simon Brown (1991)
James "Buddy" McGirt (1991-1993)
Pernell Whitaker (1993-1997)
Oscar De La Hoya (1997-1999)
Felix Trinidad, Jr. (1999-2000; Vacated title)
Sugar" Shane Mosley (2000-2002)
Vernon Forrest (2002-2003)
Ricardo Mayorga (2003)

Sugar Shane Mosley (2009-2010)
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (2010-Present)
IF he does fight Cotto and beat him for the MW title, he would probaly have the three cheapest and most embarrassing lineal tirtles in history!

Well to me being the Lineal champ isn't better than beating a ATG or HOF fighter.
For example, Floyds Corrales win or if he actually fought with Manny would be much better legacy wise than winning the Lineal from Baldomir.
The Cotto fight idk its not that bad, why don't you like the fight? Besides Manny, Canelo, Cotto i don't see Floyd doing big PPV #'s.
Now 154 he should have it because him and Canelo where the #1 and 2 by Ring magazine at the time and that creates the Lineal. Also the The Ring Magazine website does have him as the 154 champion, its not Vacant.

I dont like it because Cotto's win flattered to decieve. Its been clear for a long time now that Sergio is shot and he looked like an absolute shell of a fighter. I'd be happy for floyd to fight for and win a title at MW as long as it was credible. Fighting Cotto now for it would absolutely suck. If Cotto fights and beats another top MW before it happens then I'm good with it happening at that point. GGG is the man at MW, that much is clear.
If floyd fights Cotto now for the MW title it would suck even more than Manny's LMW title against Marg and Floyd's CW lmw fight against Canelo.
And yet he is not the top dog in any of those divisions. Pac, Lara, and GGG are the real champions of those divisions. Mayweather was a great fighter but nowadays he can barely get by a Khan/Alexander leftover in Maidana.
Lol, these haters kill me. Pac ain't the real champion of anything. The most over rated fighter since rocky. Lol pac is and always will be a mirage.
Titles aren't everything for sure. But the feat itself would be incredible and he would be the first to do it. He would also be one of the few fighters to win 3 legitimate titles in one of the original weight classes; lw, welter, mw. As someone else stated however, fights over hof'ers carries more weight.
