Comments Thread For: Jessie Vargas: I Want To Become a Superstar in Boxing

Life as a world champion seems to sit well with the new IBO/WBA "regular" junior welterweight titlist Jessie Vargas.

"It's been great, after the fight I’ve been very happy, full of joy," Vargas said "(I'm) just enjoying the moment and looking forward to the next goal that I want to accomplish and that's to be known as one of the best in the sport.

He got a gift decision vs. the Hawk. He better learn to sit down on his punches and start KO'ing dudes if he wants to be a star.

Great. You should start by beating someone with a pulse without help from the judges.

This guy has gotten the nod in how many close fights already? I lost count.

I have liked Vargas for a few years. The fight that really won me over was his fight against Lanardo Tyner. It was a gritty, ugly, foul fest fight, that was the type of fight Tyner wanted. Vargas was able to fight the opponents fight and win a rugged fight. Cant do that all the time, but it showed he had will.

Just saw he fights on the Rios/Chaves card. Not sure if Rios needs to be in with a guy like Chaves.

Vargas, for the first time, actually impressed me in his last fight as he fought and boxed very well. Would like to see him in some good matchups in the future.

LOL you sound bitter, Vargas clearly beat him. Also, you don't have to KO people to be a huge star. The two biggest starts in the sport today, Pacquiao and Mayweather, don't regularly get KO's nowadays. It's not easy stopping every opponent once you fight elite fighters.

Only fight I remember thinking he got a gift in was the Lopez fight, and even that was pretty close. What other fights are you talking about?

Rematch Lopez @ 147. I feel he should've gotten the nod the first time, but Vargas has a chance to beat him now. Lopez has been on the decline after being in big wars the last couple of years.

He shocked me against Khabib. He's now got wins over him, Omotoso and Josesito Lopez. He's building a nice little resume for himself.

I never said he got "gifts". He got the nod in close fights that could have easily gone the other way (Lopez, Omotoso, Khabib). None of those was a robbery, but none was a decisive win, either. And these are B level guys.

I have no problem with Vargas, but his resume is an awful lot like that of JCC Jr (pre-Martinez): close, workmanlike wins over solid second tier opponents. Nothing about him spells "future great". Doesn't mean he is not a good fighter in his own right.

Hopefully he can add more to his KO count after moving down to 140.
