Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez: I'm The Power Puncher in This Fight

World champion Sergio Martinez believes the only reason Miguel Cotto has chosen to fight him is because he thinks he's over the hill.

The WBC middleweight kingpin puts his title on the line against the Puerto Rican legend at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night, with Martinez of the belief that Cotto only took the fight because he believes the Argentine is past his best.

Cotto is attempting to make history by becoming his nation’s first four-weight world champion when he makes the move up to the 160 pound division, but Martinez, who contentiously overcame Britain’s Martin Murray in his last outing, says he is in for a rude awakening.

I have to agree. Miguel had heavy hands at lower weights; but, at 160, I have to believe Sergio punches harder.

On another note, I like what Martinez said about the Murray fight. If he means it, and I believe he does, it says a lot. A healthy "Maravilla" will be a nightmare for Cotto on Saturday. Let's see who shows up.

51-2 (28 ko's)?? Hows this guy the power puncher? P-will had chicken legs and hit him on the money, but. Who else has he knocked out since then besides bums in argentina! Cotto has more k.os...i dont care who is a real middleweight or not, hell martinez is small for the weight class anyway. Cotto puts more into his punches the martinez does, thats for sure!

Fight against Barker, dzungrik, and maklin dont convince me he is the power puncher in this fight!

Forget about KO percentages. If there were a way to prove it, I would be willing to bet real money that Martinez punches harder than Cotto right now.

If you are a student of the game you can see by the technique who hits harder and believe me cotto puts more weight behind his punches..you have to had stepped in the ring before to understand what iam saying...and thats what it is i dont give a *** about anything else you have to say, go troll another thread.

You have to go by percentages, and you have to by who has better technique.

I guess that's the only way to know for sure, right? lol

"The Punisher" had never been stopped before Martinez knocked him out cold in epic, epic fashion. Sure, it was a perfect punch, but it's not easy at all to knock out a fighter like that. Paul looked like he had been shot dead...eyes open and everything.

If Cotto wins on saturday... I don't want to hear all that "Martinez lost caus he was injured & old" the man himself said he has no injuries... can't wait for tomorrow's weigh in.

Percentages can be deceiving due to various factors. How can we possibly know the chin-quality of all the fighters both these men have fought? Also, Martinez and Cotto have differing styles. I would say that Miguel's style lent itself to a higher KO rate. We'll have a much better idea how Cotto's power looks at 160 on Saturday. He'll be facing the lineal middleweight champ. That's as good a test as any.
