Fighters with big fan bases like Cotto do it, but Keith Thurman? That never happens with guys like that
That probably means he was the biggest name on the card. So it would be pretty smart to use him to sell tickets and get people to come in and look at your other fighters. Or, just maybe, Thurman is one of those fighters who might leave with him. Lots of possibilities.

Richard Schaefer doesn't know how to start from scratch. The day Richard Schaefer has to go to a dirty gym to scout talent will be the day he flies back to Switzerland and never returns. He doesn't know how to do it.

Oscar De La Hoya will be a success in boxing for decades to come. When he cuts Schaefer loose, Showtime will still be there and HBO (and its larger budget and bigger audience) will be there with its arms open.

Schaefer's the guy who has burned bridges and cost people money. Oscar's only hurt himself. Boxing people will all gladly do business with him forever.

He is Golden Boy. Richard Schaefer isn't. Richard Schaefers are a dime a dozen in boxing. Oscar could hire another guy to run it tomorrow with more business experience.
It's crazy that you've waited 10 years and this is the topic you choose to talk about.

I think your wrong on almost all accounts and most of its been garbage reasoning , All speculation on my part but if Oscar and Richard separate, I don't see Oscar holding much power unless Haymon / TMT decide to work with him Which I don't see happening.

Anyone else realize That the Canelo vs Lara card, I think only Lara is a Haymon fighter. Canelo, Mares, Juamma, Herrera, Vargas, Lopez, Oquendo. It's been awhile since GB hasn't had a majority of Haymon fighters on the card.

After this PPV I think is when shiz will hit the fan and people will have a better idea of what's going on.

You know we're talking about the fight at Stubhub Center right? With Matthysse on the undercard. There's no way in hell they thought Thurman could sell more tickets than Matthysse, especially in Southern California where they support Latino fighters.

I think a guy like Thurman can (and probably will tbh) leave, but that's why Schaefer screwed over GBP and probably a good reason as to why he will be out of a job soon.

I wonder why people think Schafer makes these decisions in a vacuum.

It's not about making the decisions it's about letting them happen. He's the CEO of GBP. It's his job to do what's best for the company. If he doesn't then he should get fired

            • You see people on here say GBP would be this or that without **** Schaefer...posters like The _ Tase say he is easily replaced. I would argue a Swiss banker who understands the ebb and flow of the boxing game is harder to replace than most of us can imagine.

              • People cannot forget the GBP Showtime deal and Mayweather deal were all organized by five men... Richard Schaefer, Al Haymon, Stephen Espinoza, Leonard Ellerbee and Sam Watson. If Richard is no longer with GBP, the best bet is that all five of these guys will continue to work together in the future most likely under the Mayweather Promotions banner. Espinoza and Schaefer are very very close. If Schaefer leaves GBP expect most Haymon fighters that aren't under contract to switch banners to Mayweather Promotions and fight on Show. The Cold War wont be over because now most of GBP's top fighters wont be with GBP they will be with Mayweather Promo, who wont work with Arum.
                .....

Or De La Hoya allows Schaefer to stay on board if him and Haymon make up with Arum and we get Mayweather-Pacquiao in September, with Thurman v Bradley, Marquez v Porter and Matthysse v Provodnikov all on the undercard..........

What do you mean by "letting it happen?" Smh. Again these things don't occur in a vacuum.

They obviously have outside influences... But why is Golden Boy building up a fighter who isn't even in their stable? Richard Schaefer, Espinoza, Haymon...Any of them could be responsible, but guess what? Only Schaefer works for Golden Boy.

It is hard to tell what is really going on over there, but I would not be shocked if your version is correct. We can assume that some changes are definitely taking place internally and the end outcome will be very interesting. I do expect litigation on some level. This silence tells me Lawyers are working.
