Maybe Frazier was just very hurt about the things Ali said about him. those things can hurt and stay with you. people don't know unless it happens to them.
I agree.
I sure hope
Smokin Joe really
didnt say it. But my
friend swears to God
he saw it in a book
and also on a tv special
about Smokin Joe.
well, i kind of don't blame him. i mean the reason why ali did that in the first place was that he was kind of, well... jealous. in Smokin' Joe, frazier said how when clay first became champion in 1964, in the summer of '64 clay went to the olympics to watch frazier win the gold medal. (it's an old practice, hw champ patterson in '60 came to see clay and so on, and so on.) when they talked, ali said something like, "stick with me, and i'll make you rich!", or something to that effect. i guess he meant that if joe became a top contender that he would give him a title shot and thus ali felt he would help frazier out in making joe alot of money. well, instead of that, ali was stripped in '67, and frazier went on to winning the title without going through muhammad first. and since ali had alot of financial problems during the layoff, frazier would be helping him out. now ali felt threatened by this. he thought he would be helping out frazier, but instead ali was frazier's charity case instead. so when talk was surfacing about ali and frazier fighting in '70 or '71, to give people the impression that ali still had the upper hand, he started saying these bad things about frazier, calling ugly, and an uncle tom, and a white man and all that. ali did this to convince himself that he was helping frazier out more than the other way around by controling the press and all that. and frazier just couldn't understand that. well, i kind of don't blame him, though. frazier's kids was given a tough time at school for ali's remarks, and it seemed like frazier was branded as the enemy. i'm sure ali didn't intend for it to get out of hand like that, but that's what happened.
...who helped Joe make millions of dollars, who helped Joe become one of the most famous boxers in history etc.....
With no Ali Frazier would have had a hell of alot less money and fame
O.K....
If someone got you a great job, but went around every day telling people you were a *** (or something) & a bum....you'd just ******ly smile & say "Thanks" ?
Ali didn't do Joe a favor, by fighting him. Theye were fighters, the best....& the best fighters are supposed to fight.
If anything.....both fattened each others' wallets & legacies.
