Someone told me that Smoking
Joe laughed about Ali being
brain damaged and gloated about it
by saying "Who do you think really
won our fights in the long run".
With this statement he was claimin
that he was the one who gave Ali brain
damage and he appeared to be gloating
about it, please dont tell me this
is true. I love Smokin Joe he is one
of my favorites. But this is a
messed up comment if he really said it.
Yes, he said it. There's a lot, or was a lot of hate for Ali from Joe. Ali, leading up to their first fight, called Joe all kinds of ugly things. He called him an Uncle Tom, ugly, ignorant, etc. Joe's kids got in trouble at school because of other kids calling their daddy names and fighting them.
See, when Ali was broke and couldn't box in the late '60's, Joe was the one that helped get his liscense reinstated...he went to Washington to plead his case! Joe gave Ali money when he couldn't pay a hotel bill.
From Joe's perspective, he helped Ali out during Ali's darkest hours and Ali returned the favour by betraying him in public....stabbing him in the back, effectively.
When Joe said what he did, on "Howard Stern Show", if I'm not mistaken, he did indeed mean it. He also says as much in his biography, "Smokin' Joe". Whether or not they've burried the hatchet since or not I don't know; but Ali really hurt Joe with all that crap back in the early 70's and Joe hasn't forgot it.
....He said it because Ali was an ******* who treated smokin Joe like ****. He called him a gorrila, made fun of hom by saying that he couldn't talk, joked about how dark he was, etc. etc. Frazier helped out Ali when he was down and hurting financialy after the draft dodging situation and Ali turned around and **** on him. What comes around definitely did go around.
Amen brother. Ali was definitely the ******* in this one.
What Frazier said, I think, was "I did that to him."

He also said, "If you look at him now and look at me, you know who won all them fights".
And said something to the effect of "Now who can't talk? Now who goes duh, duh, duh, duh?"
Yeah, bitterness and anger. Sad really. Those two ought to be great friends for what they did for each other's legacies....to say nothing of how much money they made each other.
The fact of the matter is that Ali said some racist comments. Ali had the power to turn some of Joe's own people (which in this case is the "black people"), against him.
Joe was raised poor and Ali was not.
Both suffered from racism, but for a person that has experienced it, to do it to another, is bull****.
Oh, one quick tidbit, there was an article that said Ali was part "white”?
maybe he was upset about that too
I really think Ali was mad that Joe had darker skin and was...
