i never even thought about this fight.

canelo would beat him easily, and hold the "wbo" title at MW. i'd be shocked if that isn't part of the plan.

Quillin is the least respected unbeaten champion in the boxing game right now.

It's probably plan B, I think plan A will be doing Canelo vs Cotto if Cotto wins for the WBC middleweight title. It would be perfect cuz he can fight at 155-157 and Cotto will be cool with it.

"HBO doesn't rule anybody out" and "They would approve Quillin at some point" is pretty vague. I does't look like they ever got HBO's approval.

They offered it and Schaeffer said we should bid.

Sounds like they didn't even get to the stage where they would ask for it because they didn't even have the approval of the other side

this fight will never ever happen. Schaefer will not piss of his boy Espinoza by letting Quillin go to HBO for a fight. Quillin also thinks he's the A side so he will want to get paid more because 'he has a belt'. Another reason this fight will never ever happen.

That's nice and dandy, but it doesn't mean Scheafer would be the only obstacle like OP said.

Anyone see Glaser's latest? Reckons Schaefer has a non-complete contract and may be out before the Canelo fight.
