CBS reported Thursday that its first-quarter earnings rose 6 percent as higher licensing fees from the company’s Showtime network helped it overcome an advertising downturn caused by less sports programming. CBS has been reducing its reliance on the volatile advertising market by seeking higher fees from cable, satellite and Internet video providers. The company attributed a 12 percent decline in its advertising sales to the rotating rights to the Super Bowl. After appearing on CBS last year, the Super Bowl shifted to Fox this year. The absence of the Super Bowl accounted for nearly all of the ad decrease during the first three months of this year, CBS said. The network also broadcast two fewer games during the N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament than it did last year. Revenue from CBS’s cable networks rose 12 percent from last year. CBS earned $468 million, or 78 cents a share, in the first quarter. That compares with $443 million, or 69 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 5 percent from last year to $3.86 billion. Analysts, on average, had projected earnings of 75 cents a share on revenue of $3.92 billion.

Lol boxing is a small part of Showtime and CBS. How much impact does it have on overall profit of Showtime and CBS?

As much as I miss Showtime's era of 'no rights, just fights' or whatever it was coined, it does seems like they are doing just fine. In the end, I can respect the effort to re-brand their boxing platform. As long as they let Bernstein do most of the talking they'll be alright

Debating is entertaining when you actually have facts on your side, and for those to suggest Showtime is "hemorrhaging money" or taking huge loses gives me a better understanding of the level of education some posters on this site may really have.

They can do whatever suits them. I just don't see why you need Mayweather to make Broner vs Garcia, Garcia vs Matthysse, Thurman vs Khan, etc. There are many fight combinations that they can make without involving Mayweather and fans would be ecstatic to watch these fights.

I can't for the life of me understand what they're waiting for. They'd rather recycle Malignaggi and Judah.

Floyd will continue to do Hatton PPV numbers if he doesn't fight fighters with good fanbases. Not that 800-900k is bad. If he wants to do over a mill, he has to fight Canelo again, Cotto-Martinez winner, Pacquiao, maybe Bradley and that's it, I don't know about a Marquez rematch if JMM beats Pac cause even though some say Marquez is different now(better) they don't actually believe that. And finally, mayyyyybe Maidana rematch could get to 1mill. Those are the only fighters he could do a mill+ with. Considering Maidana's never been on PPV before, 800k is really good.

Garcia, Khan, Thurman, Lara, Porter...all of these fights sound good to me, but they will all have trouble making it to 600k IMO.

They are losing money Larry, they need to split their losses with HBO and it actually makes a ton of sense and probably why Oscar is talking with Arum again.

So Showtime had 1 or 2 PPV's fights that year and one of them was the most profitable ever and they only got a 12% increase... That's ****ing terrible the last Showtime PPV card I can remember before Floyd/Canelo are Floyd/Guerrero and Cotto/Mayorga. Showtime got absolutely taken like fools, that's what they get for hiring a former GBP lawyer.
