Comments Thread For: DiBella Considers Martinez-Cotto Catch Weight "Silly"

Promoter Lou DiBella finds it “silly” and “annoying” that the Sergio Martinez-Miguel Cotto middleweight title fight will be contested at a maximum catch weight of 159 pounds.

Nevertheless, their contracts call for Martinez and Cotto to weigh no more than 159 pounds, one beneath the middleweight limit, for their highly anticipated June 7 showdown for Martinez’s WBC middleweight title at Madison Square Garden (HBO Pay-Per-View). The 33-year-old Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs) began his pro career 13 years ago as a junior welterweight, three weight classes below middleweight, and has never fought at a weight higher than the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds.

Cotto only fights for Lineage at the full weight.

So far he's fought for 0 Lineages.

This is his first attempt and it's at a catchweight.

Cotto winning this won't count for ****. This will be a catch weight title for him IF he wins. Sadly for him Maravilla is a natural 154 who had to go to 160 to get useful fights. So, Cotto is really digging a deeper hole with this.

Martinez weighed in 159.5 for Murray, 159 for Chavez Jr and 157.5 for Macklin. That's his last 3 fights.

So the catchweight should have no real impact on him.

Why at 59? Because Miguel Cotto said so.
