Boris Arencibia of Caribe Promotions, Rigondeaux’s promoter, said he has no problem with drug testing, but he doesn’t trust VADA, because he said the organization has links to Victor Conte, the former head of BALCO. Conte pleaded guilty in July of 2005 to one count of conspiracy to distribute steroids and did a four-month prison sentence, but since his release has become an anti-doping advocate and a supporter of VADA.
Pedro Diaz, Rigondeaux’s trainer, said he respects the USADA. “USADA conducts testing for Olympic athletes in the U.S.,” Diaz said. “It’s also the testing agency that the best boxers in the sport, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto, uses. That’s why we proposed to Nonito and his team that we can have USADA be a part of this testing.”
