Comments Thread For: Abner Mares on Working With Trainer Virgil Hunter

Abner Mares looks like he will finally be making his return to the ring as he is slated to fight on June 21st at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. While Mares will be going back to the same venue where he suffered his first professional defeat, one thing that will be different is his corner as he is now training under the tutelage of Virgil Hunter.

Mares is one of many fighters who have headed to Oakland, CA to train with Hunter after suffering a loss or trying to get their careers on track. Most notably Amir Khan, Andre Berto and Alfredo Angulo are some of the names Hunter has added to his roster within the past year.

Virgil Hunter? No.....anybody but the fight whisperer.

Mares should go back to Joel Diaz. Robert Garcia would be great for him too.

Mares and Virgil is such a bad combination. Virgil will probably tell him to embrace his fouls. Jab, jab, uppercut to the nuts.

Meh,Abner already fights pretty dirty. He is however missing someone who can whisper sweet nothings into his ear, this is just what he needed to take him to the top. He'll be the number two p4p fighter again before long...

Mares realized he was gonna get hurt (he did get hurt already) if he fought at 126-130 the way he used to fight at 118-122. I actually think he realized this in the Ponce de Leon fight. The knockout loss to Jhonny Gonzalez was just the confirmation.

Robert Garcia would get Mares killed, he's not fighting Bantamweights anymore. I heard he still plans to move up to 130 soon. He wants to add new weapons to his arsenal. Let's see what Virgil Hunter can do with him.

Mares should never have left Nacho Beristain.
