James toney was the master of the shoulder roll, and then mayweather perfected it.

Reflexes and a great ability to read your opponent.

dont think so, look at golovkin or matthysse and pirog(can't remember for sure if he actually uses the shoulder roll)

i dont think much of the conventional "scream(the painting)" like covering of one's head, it blinds you, makes headmovement awkward too, people expect you to weave like that can you believe it? so much effort and energy it would take to consistently do that through-out a fight

Any kind of defense is not effective with slow reflexes.

It's like saying a certain lingerie type doesn't work for women who are 300 lbs.

Berto's shoulder roll against Guerrero was pure comedy.

Toney was a masterful reader of his opponent's intentions. Defensively he didn't have anything like Mayweather's reflexes, but his superb instincts allowed him to counter beautifully from that posture.

Roach said that Toney was by far the greatest fighter he'd ever known in that respect. Not only could he anticipate what was coming, he had an ability to throw unorthodox counter shots in response that the opponent would never expect.

Toney's probably the best example of an instinctively brilliant philly shell counterpuncher, whereas Mayweather's a great example of a sharp, fast, reflexively brilliant one.

Broner is an example of neither.

That guy in your avatar has one hell of an underrated defensive guard.
