I think the rematch does better as long as they sell it right.
Froch Groves II is a similar situation (first fight was expected to be a wash out but the fight was way more competitive than most imagined) and this rematch is set to be one of the biggest UK fights of all time.
I dont know the ins and outs of the boxing business im sure, but do Showtime need to make money on Mayweathers fights for this deal to be a sound investment? This was a huge power play more than anything, if they can build some real next gen stars (say Canelo, Porter, Thurman, Garcia etc) off of having floyd on their network and dominate boxing coverage becuase of that, then that is surely going to bring in plenty of money in the future.
Obviously its dissapointing Floyd doesnt have the opponents to make bigger numbers now though.
Anyway, **** PPV.
