Mayorga is one of my favorite fightere bar none. The man could make me laugh if my favorite pet died with his ****talking.

There has been a good analysis of the similarities, i.e both guys being essentially brawlers who come from all angles, and the relentless pressure, the weakness to a great body shot, etc.

When it comes to punch delivery the biggest diffrence is that Madianna is a heavy handed puncher. Mayorga is explosive....Thats what I love about el matdore when he explodes with his whole being into each punch....I wish I could get my martial arts students to piunch with that attitude and explosiveness. Madiana is heavy handed. when he catches you its a solid thump and it connects up through his entire body.

Another way to view this difference is two guys pitching a baseball. One guy has a slow delivery, and you see the ball clearly, it is placed precisely and when you catch it it hurts!! Meanwhile? I once caught a college pitcher who was throwing about 85 miles an hour and when the ball went in the mitt it was so fast you could not hardly see it and when it landed it felt light as a bird.

But Maidana is Maidana. He is not a poor man's Hatton as Khan fans were saying leading up to the fight. He's not Baldomir, Gatti, or Mayorga.


He's Maidana.



One thing I wish he would have done in the fight is come in a little lighter. I don't really think his power was aided by the extra weight and it can only hurt his cardio. He also needed to throw the lead straight right. If his jab was landing with some consistency, he definitely could have landed the lead right. But what people don't realize is Maidana was somewhat holding his own jabbing and countering Mayweather in the center of the ring. He was obviously at a distinct disadvantage doing so, but he showed admirable skill.

Prime Mayorga to me is all fire and no form. A force of nature really. Maidana has more structure than all that, when all is said and done.
