Tommy Morrison; Still Walking Tall

In February of 1996, the boxing world was shaken to its core when ex-WBO/IBC heavyweight champion and Rocky V star Tommy “The Duke” Morrison failed a pre-fight physical examination, testing positive for the HIV virus. He immediately announced his retirement from the ring. Now a decade later, Tommy Morrison plans to take on the Nevada State Athletic Commission that banned him from the sport and launch a comeback.

Morrison had just signed a three-fight 38.5 million dollar deal with promoter Don King. His first fight was to be against journeyman Arthur “Stormy” Weathers, and then he would fight another tune-up fight against stronger opposition, and then finally take on ex-undisputed heavyweight champion of the world Iron Mike Tyson who had just been released from prison.

“The first fight was going to be Stormy Weathers, who I would’ve took out during the National Anthem,” Morrison told me during a long two-hour interview. “And then we’d fight another journeyman, someone a little tougher. And then I would’ve fought Tyson right out of prison.” [details]

I miss watching the Duke. Ko power and a nack for getting Ko'ed himself. That was entertainment.
He's crazy to think he can come back though. HIV drugs are so good now that a lot of people can live a long and full life, but that doesn't make it ok to infect someone with blood splatter in the ring.

Man, Tommy's delusional. There's no way that any commission will give him a license, or that any court will overturn it. And even if they did, they couldn't make fighters fight him...so who would he fight?

Tommy should just accept the fact that he had a little too much fun with Las Vegas stripper/whore orgies and be glad that he's healthy 10 years later. A lot of HIV+ people don't even live 10 more years, much less be strong and healthy.

Besides, shouldn't he have some money? Did he not stash any away? The guy fought every damn fight from when he was 30-0 in front of a national audience, not to mention being in Rocky V. He should just retire and do his AIDS foundation stuff and not try to rock the boat and fight the rule against HIV+ fighters, because it's there for good reason.

This is absurd, hell Holyfield getting his decision overturned is ******, because he will prove nothing except what an old man looks like when he's delusional. But Morrison with HIV? Surely they wouldn't allow this. And if a guy fights Morrison knowing damn well that he has HIV and he catches it in the process, hey whatever it's his own damn fault.
