The thing is I've actually heard the 'hairy chin protector' argument brought forward before - the scratching and opening of cuts I can kinda accept (the BBBofC requires fighters to be beardless for, in my understanding, just that reason), but the idea that it might reduce the impact of punches (significantly - that is - of course there will be a miniscule effect) just makes m p1ss my sides.

If the beard is thick, it may cause some cushion effect. More importantly, it may give a false perception of where his chin actually is. It should be shaved off.
