Or maybe none of the above? Their relationship might've just not worked out, and his father felt it was better his son stayed in his custody and supervision. There's a bunch of single fathers out there raising their boys, and the mother allowed for it because the father wasn't going to have it any other way. A lot of times, it's better that way for boys.
