        Don't know if anyone's mentioned him; but Billy Conn. Billy Conn had no amateur fights and was one of the best middleweights/ligh-heavyweights who ever lived.

            I think the following never followed the institutionalized amateur path. They went into boxing to make a living...paid for their efforts from the very start of their careers. They were pros from the gitgo:

            Flash Elorde
            Eder Jeoffrey
            Sandy Saddler
            Fighting Harada
            Bernabe Villacampo
            Erbito Salavarria
            Hilario Zapata
            Alfonso Zamora
            Ruben Olivares

            I could be misinformed about some of them though...
