  • Margarito was a decent fighter but Arum made him biggest hypejob of the last 15 years

Before Mayweather turned down a fight with him to fight the real champion in Baldomir and former undisputed champion in Judah, Margarito was the WBO welterweight titleholder and on a roll. Wins over Kermit Cintron, Antonio Diaz, and Six heads Lewis were his biggest wins and he was very big for a welterweight.

By piggy-backing and using his former clients name, he made Margarito "the most feared welterweight in the world."

I never saw what it was that was supposed to make him so formidible for Mayweather to supposedly duck him. He was the first of many fighters who would become similar to a "white hope" on who would beat Mayweather.OKay he had a great chin and stamina, after that he has low marks in just about everything else. slow of hand and foot...combos were slow, footwork crappy, he didnt cut off the ring he just followed fighters around. His power is up for debate considering we dont even know the fights he used illegal gloves in.

Now its the end of his career...He was obliterated by a 37 year old Mosley, dominated again by Cotto but this time lost on a stoppage, and got the stuffing beat out of him againt Pacquaio, Lost to the wholly average Daniel Santos, former WBO 154 beltholder.

He was never anything special to begin with and im glad that era of time is over. A win over this guy between 05-present would have done nothing to enhance Mayweather's resume

Margatito made Cotto take a knee, Floyd **** his pants, and took Manny out of his prime. Tell me who's got a record that can top that. His worst loss was to known drug cheat Mosley who did no random testing for that fight.

By Roberto Elmore: After Manny Pacquiao made easy work of Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, the howls of ***8220;Floyd ducked both of these fighters***8221; reemerged. Many of these claims have been opinionated and have not yet seen proof of these allegations. I did write an article stating that Mayweather side stepping Margarito was a good move. And financially it was back then.

But upon my return to the article, I found facts that will support this article. Now, I know there will still be many who will contest these facts and continue with their barrage of name calling. But it***8217;s not my job to control opinions; just give the facts and let the readers decide. But I want you to pay close attention to the quotes and who***8217;s saying what.
After Mayweather defeated Zab Judah, he was offered 8 million to fight Antonio Margarito on August 12th 2006. Leonard Ellerbe had this to say after the Judah fight.
Floyd is not 100 percent healthy,***8221; Ellerbe said. ***8220;He has a bruised right hand. His hand is not broken. It***8217;s bruised, but it***8217;s a bad bruise. He wants to go into any fight 100 percent healthy. If Antonio Margarito happens to be the best available option when he is healthy, so be it***8221;.

***8220;We are not turning down Margarito. I want to make that crystal clear. When and if he is the best available option for Floyd***8217;s next fight, that***8217;s the direction he will move in.***8221; If you noticed, that was Ellerbe speaking. Not Floyd. Let***8217;s move on.

Bob Arum, Mayweather***8217;s promoter at the time said that Mayweather preferred to await the outcome of the May 6 Oscar De La Hoya-Ricardo Mayorga fight instead of committing to Margarito because he would prefer to fight De La Hoya.

Arum stated that Mayweather would have fought Margarito for the 8 million, but he wanted a guaranteed 10 million to fight Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton. Arum only guaranteed him 7 million. And for those who don***8217;t know Cotto and Hatton were at the Mayweather-Gatti fight and Cotto was ranked number 5 by the ring at the time (Proof: Listen to the commentary Jim Lampley at the end of round 5) . Cotto had just moved up to the 140 pound weight class and he didn***8217;t make an offer to fight Mayweather after the Gatti fight.

Arum said Mayweather also asked for $20 million to fight De La Hoya, a fight Arum said he wasn***8217;t interested in participating in. ***8220;That***8217;s not in the cards,***8221; Arum said. ***8220;He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? It***8217;s not there. Sometimes, my man, you gotta know when to hold ***8216;em and when to fold ***8216;em. We***8217;ll talk about things down the road.***8221; Notice this part Arum was talking.

Face time: Mayweather had nothing to gain from fighting Margarito financially. There was no reward for this. There might have been a risk (but I can***8217;t say what would have happened because it didn***8217;t happen). Mayweather went on to fight the Carlos Baldomir for a dollar more 8,000,001, but he was the lineal welterweight champ. But Oscar had both risk and reward and we saw the results. Several people have fought and beat Margarito and their careers haven***8217;t gone anywhere (Paul Williams, Shane Mosley). If anyone can provide me with a web sight, newspaper clipping, anything that has facts on it, I***8217;m open to it. Peace.

I would have to agree completely. Margarito has been the biggest hype in years next to Berto... His career best was against Cotto, which outside of the delusional feel it was a faulty win (if not down right a cheat). The man has been bested and exposed by the best and he is no longer relevant.

Margarito had a following before all of that... .. before youtube was invented and people saw that video of the two interacting. MAybe after that the hype started to get going but before that he had an organic following of his own. REally no need to hype an all action pressure fighter, people are drawn to those types

                lol @ biggest hypejob.

Dude got hyped to god status by some but he earned the good hype. He beat some really good dudes at WW, plus he got robbed at 154 vs Santos(fight deserved at least a draw).

No, no, Arum (hiss, boo, hiss) was only trying to put together that fight when he knew Floyd was leaving.

the bold just about summed it up for me about how I felt about Mayweather not fighting Margarito. I would have like to have saw the fight, but in Mayweather shoes it was all risk and no reward....Hatton and DLH was risk and reward
