One thing is for certain, the police and state of NJ screwed up big time.

If he wasn't involved in the murders, then he wrongly spent all those years in prison.

If he was the killer, or one of them, then he was released early due to the lack of procedures followed.

Sad case all around. Bottom line is that 3 people were killed and there was even more injustice when it came to the Carter case, no matter which side you believe.

Law Axiom: If your false in one, your False in All, Seems to Apply Here!!!
I never said or implied that Carter's own words freed him. What I was referring to is people's belief in Carter's story, and their citing his book as necessarily providing facts. Why would anyone write a book and intentionally incriminate themselves? Now, I certainly agree that anyone seeking the truth in this case should read his autobiography; but Carter's writings should definitely be regarded with a supremely critical mind-set.

I don't know if Dylan stopped supporting Carter or not. I couldn't find any evidence of this. You seem to be convinced that Carter was framed because he was regarded as an "intimidating black dude," or that the police had it out for him. Not that any of that is out of the realm of possibility, but it's also the kind of thing you've heard repeated by countless defense attorneys over the years.

As for the thieves' testimony: Were they lying when they testified against Carter, or when they recanted their story? Do you not think it possible that after nearly twenty years they didn't really give a damn what became of the case? Again, not that it's not possible that they finally told the truth, but it's tough to claim their word ever meant much without evidence supporting them.

In the end, I remain fairly neutral on this topic. I simply don't know enough about it. I only meant to point out that Hollywood is a very poor source of historical fact. This I know for certain. I also know for certain that many people take up a cause without knowing all the facts. I also know for certain that some people support a case because they regard it as being greater than the individuals involved.

Good post. Carter's case gets all the attention now, but the three people killed in cold blood are largely forgotten. If Carter was innocent, then there were at least four tragedies. If he was guilty, then he should've spent the rest of his days in jail, himself forgotten.

Yep...complete injustice and a tragedy either way.
