Hatton Admits He's Afraid of Floyd Mayweather

Well in his last fight he was clearly not his usual self and suffering mentally from all the problems outside the ring. And it's not tune-ups as such, it's mainly to raise his profile in America but also to get experience of fighting in America. He believes he has the beating of Mayweather, so why not give himself a better chance of winning and also actually make the fight big?

He's already promised that the Mayweather fight will happen in 2006, if Mayweather wants it.

What more tune ups are needed? What's with getting used to fighting in America? Not to throw as many low blows as he did in Manchester? I guess that's what it's all about. Mayweather even stated himself that he would go and fight Hatton in Manchester. So i don't really know whats with Hatton. I think his record is padded! He is going down just like Calzaghe.

Hatton is a very down to earth type of man and conducts himself in the media as such. The fact that Hatton takes care of business in the ring is enough of a ticket seller; he has not had to resort to trash-talking his opponents and therefore, I doubt that what comes from his mouth in the press is far from the truth. I would not be surprised to hear Hatton admit that he turned down a fight with Floyd Mayweather, perhaps even on more than one occasions.

Mayweather is a great fighter and perhaps the best pure boxer in the world, and Hatton respects him appropriately for that. Mayweather does like to call fighters out at short notice, possibly knowing the good possibility that they will refuse him. At lightweight, Mayweather called out Juan Lazcano at perhaps two weeks' notice for a world title fight. No fighter, and certainly not Lazcano, with any respect for their career will put themselves at that kind of disadvantage if they don't have to.

There is no chance that Hatton is going to fight Mayweather soon into his campaign in America, and really, there's no reason that he should. Mayweather has already admitted that he would not fight in England, therefore, Hatton has no choice but to bring himself to America, but in doing so, he must make the kinds of calculations that will allow himself to fight effectively in America since he has fought most of his career at home in England.

There was a nice article at MaxBoxing.com a few days ago detailing how Dan Birmingham intends to acclimate Jeff Lacy to the demands of fighting Joe Calzaghe in Manchester at two in the morning. Hatton would have to similar adjustments throughout his transition to training and fighting in America. It is unrealistic to expect him to have to do that for the first time and have to deal with Mayweather at the same time.

The fight hasn't happened yet and Hatton's displaying a defeatist attitude. One can never go into a fight with shaky confidence. It's a recipe for disaster. Perhaps Hatton is too humble for his own good.

I know it seems like it and you could certainly get that impression, but i've been around Hatton and can tell you that he is just really down to earth and not pretentious at all. I think to be as good as he is, he has to be straight with himself. He does not have to sell fights because he takes care of things inside the ring. He won't change the way he talks because of the Tszyu fight, but the confidence he will have gained in what he can do in the ring because of it. Mayweather is a different proposition than Tszyu though, and I would expect Hatton to make his adjustments for that.

Look, I live in Texas, I know racism exists. But to make thread after thread bashing fighters because of their skin color, and bashing other posters just because they like them is not supposed to be the reason we are here on this site.
