Cope with what? It was a clear strategy in this particular fight. Alexander has never been a guy to consistently clinch. In this fight in particular it stopped Maidana from working at all. Alexendar would work from range, run, hold when he got backed up, and Maidana wasn't allowed to work.... Simple as that.

Maidana clearly didn't deal with it well, but that doesn't change the fact that it's illegal.

Excessive clinching isn't a valid excuse for losing nearly every single round. It didn't stop Bradley and Porter from completely dominating Alexander. Maidana is a solid, fan-friendly ****er and that's about it. His so called improvements have coincided with favourable matchmaking.

Truth is Maidana was fighting with a stomache infection that night so he had to really concentrate on not loosening his buttocks if ya know what i mean, which definitely hindered his mobility. Maidana said so himself in an interview.

He had a sore toe.
