Top Rank doesn't have that many MGM-caliber headliners outside of Pacquiao...so short term, MGM won't be missing that much outside of Pacquiao.

Golden Boy having Canelo gives them something Top Rank doesn't have...a young boxer who can deliver at the MGM box office...although Canelo-Angulo didn't generate as much as Bradley-Marquez, let alone what Pacquiao does even on a "poor" box office showing like Pacquiao-Bradley II.

Let's also remember Las Vegas had a pretty down year for boxing in 2013....they only 16 fights, well down from 2012.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal is Nevada's most trusted source for local news, Las Vegas sports, business news, gaming news, entertainment news and more.

You take Top Rank out of MGM (and perhaps out of Las Vegas) and there's not much left for Las Vegas outside of 37-year old Mayweather and Canelo.

So let's see how Canelo against Lara, both in terms of gate and in the ring...and then where he goes from there.

Golden Boy's going to have to milk what they can out of Canelo....and I question Golden Boy's ability to bring along young fighters...we've seen a number of them stumble, like Daniel Jacobs and Adrien Broner.

Things change rather quick in boxing and I would say their ability to produce stars is about getting the right guys as most prospects fail even the top end ones.

Talking about things changing quickly, MGM siding with Schaefer and GBP seems now rather...hmm.

We'll see how that looks later, but for right now..
