TR and goldenboy are competitors. it's actually quite rare for businesses to work with people who compete directly.

bob arum is 82 years old. his promotional company appears to be on its last legs. manny pacquiao is aging quickly, and arum has no young stars.

catering to the needs of showtime and goldenboy exclusively may have been deemed more important than continuing a relationship with arum.

this may be posture, and they may renew a relationship. it appears to me as though it isn't posture, and that MGM wants to move in another direction. goldenboy is a strong promotor right now, and a prolific producer of top billed boxing matches. having their favor has value. MGM discontinuing a relationship with arum damages him, and benefits goldenboy.
You're acting like Pac still doesn't bring people to the venue.

HOw is it not good that they aren't bringing Pac in anymore? A little bit, a lot... he still brought people in to the venue.

Catering to Bob's needs? You mean putting up advertisement for his fight? I find it crazy that everybody is glad the MGM did this and blame Bob for it.... wtf, really? That seems like a very basic thing to do.

They're competitors yea, but you don't find it unfair if a place that's supposed to be neutral gives preferential treatment over another? Outside banners, they have no control over, but they had May/Maidana advertisent inside until Bob complained about it.... hardly fair competition.

Bob is an ass, but this is very unfair

pacquiao's very clearly not the draw he used to be, and he's trending downward. mgm cares less about the gate [they see no money from the gate,] than they do the amount of people that come to the casino. arum just doesn't have the pull he did four years ago.

you're also completely discounting the most important fact in all of this:
bob arum is 82 years old.

Did Bob care when he took Manny to Texas in all of 2010 or when he took him Macua last year. If they chose sides they seem to have chosen the one who's more loyal and brings in more revenue.

You're actin like he's nothing now... He's second behind mayweathers and from there it's a pretty big gap. I mean holy crap, people are acting like PAC fight only brought five people in.

And who cares if he's 82, he must know he's dying soon because he's been putting more thigs into debouffs hands as of lately.

Looks like everything is business unless it's with arum.

It is kind of about trends though, it is not where you are it is where you are going to be. I think it could go either way for Manny next fight but the opponent will be crucial and MGM knows what Top Rank has to offer so I don't think they are near as bullish on Manny based on that sort of stuff.

At least not bullish enough to care to deal with Arum at this moment

I gets he's trending down, but people are acting like he's some kind of weak draw or something while his downward trend still beats out anyone not named mayweather.

Arum is not going to treat him like a diminishing asset though, so that will lead to Arum talking even more smack when they try to negotiate the next appearance there. It is kind of like the HBO/GBP thing, except HBO made a public statement on the matter where MGM seems to be letting it known behind the scenes, and I would say it is easier to forgive and forget without the public statement.

The problem Arum has is not Manny, it is the fact he has no one even close to replace him that MGM feels they need. If Arum has such a guy MGM would swallow their pride and if Arum can pull that guy out of his ass I am sure they will be quick to listen to him.

Agreed on that point...as of right now.

Top Rank doesn't have that many MGM-caliber headliners outside of Pacquiao...so short term, MGM won't be missing that much outside of Pacquiao.

Golden Boy having Canelo gives them something Top Rank doesn't have...a young boxer who can deliver at the MGM box office...although Canelo-Angulo didn't generate as much as Bradley-Marquez, let alone what Pacquiao does even on a "poor" box office showing like Pacquiao-Bradley II.

Let's also remember Las Vegas had a pretty down year for boxing in 2013....they only 16 fights, well down from 2012.

                    http://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/...boxing-capital

You take Top Rank out of MGM (and perhaps out of Las Vegas) and there's not much left for Las Vegas outside of 37-year old Mayweather and Canelo.

So let's see how Canelo against Lara, both in terms of gate and in the ring...and then where he goes from there.

Golden Boy's going to have to milk what they can out of Canelo....and I question Golden Boy's ability to bring along young fighters...we've seen a number of them stumble, like Daniel Jacobs and Adrien Broner.
