JUYJUY check out this quote I digged up from a guy close to the Hatton camp. You'll enjoy it.

"Now they're getting it on, and after watching tape after tape of Tszyu, I actually think his deteriorating footwork will let him down. Hatton CAN box conservatively whilst maintaining a high workrate; Hatton doesn't get hit as often as everyone thinks and everyone seems to believe that Zoo is some kind of 140 pound Mike Tyson.

He's not. He obviously KOs people when he gets a clear shot at their chin, but he nails them due to his timing and guys steaming into him / pulling back amateurishly.

The way to beat this guy is not to offer your chin up on a plate. I don't think he's as effective an offensive force as everyone thinks. Mitchell (II), Judah, Hurtado, even Rodriguez all basically tried to trade with him, punch for punch, or committed some other basic flaw. The way to do it is to stand your ground and keep turning him, which I think RH will do.

I actually see quite a boring fight for the first half, until the old guy gets desperate and realises he's behind. Then he'll be the one turning it into a street fight."

When all the other kids would just rush in and throw a load of leather, it was noticed early on how little Richard Hatton was the one to stay composed, take a step back if needed, and look to pick his shots. At 12 years old, he started punching to the body on his own accord - nobody told him to. Paul Dunn of the Sale West ABC started training him in 1994 and there's footage of Ricky beating Albert Coates for the NABC title in January 1995, Coates was the reigning champion and Hatton was a big underdog but dominated from start to finish. He looked damn impressive in those clips against Coates, the way he would move his head on the way in and the way he would throw a little jab on the way out. He was showing a lot of finesse. Then he went international and starting beating all the Russian's, Bulgarian's and Cuban's, it was barmy.

        Oh yeah.

        And just to note:

3 of the Hatton votes so far belong to JuyJuy. They are alternate accounts with identical IP addresses.

Every time Ricky has been cut (which was almost every fight back in the day) he has always kept his cool and kept his head, even with blood running into his eyes he had the instincts and sense of timing/distance to stay in control of a fight.

Eamonn Magee was trash talking Hatton in the Manchester and Belfast newspapers and in the pre-fight press conferences, he was trash talking Hatton so bad that Hatton just wanted to get in that ring and take Magee's ****ing head off! Magee's winding up tactics suprisingly worked (I thought Hatton knew better at the time), because that's exactly what Ricky did - he came out swinging and got caught, Hatton was down against Magee in the first 30 seconds of the first round - the first knockdown of his career. Now rather than get up and be twice as angry and try twice as hard to land a bomb on Magee, do you know what Hatton did? He got up, dusted himself down, and brought back his old boxing skills to school Magee in the second round and throughout the middle rounds. Hatton got himself calmed down and used his boxing on Magee, I thought it was impressive to come back from an early knockdown like that and impressive to do that to such an awkward, counter-punching southpaw.

JuicyJuice have you mentioned Hatton's footspeed? Castillo is a world-class fighter, but his footspeed is clearly lacking. A fighter that closes the distance as well as Hatton definetly has a chance to upset him, not to mention Hatton's ability to diffuse punches and sap his opponents strength.

I can't make an honest assessment of him to be honest because I've only seen the Robinson fights.

It's weird though, because I havent't seen Ricky use his boxing since a few flashes in the Magee fight. He's been a relentless pressure fighter for so many years now that I don't know if he can bring back his boxing, I'm sure he can but it's weird because those flashes in the Magee fight were five years ago now.
