  • Comments Thread For: Canelo Not Interested in Erislandy Lara's WBA Title

BoxingScene.com reported earlier that Golden Boy Promotions is negotiation a July 12th pay-per-view fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KOs) and WBA 'regular' junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs).

Lara is already booked to defend his title against Ishe Smith on May 2nd at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. To finalize a deal to face Canelo, Lara would have to withdraw from the Smith defense.

According to Schaefer... Schaefer said that Alvarez-Lara would be contracted at the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds, but that Alvarez does not want to fight for Lara's world title. Lara was recently elevated from an interim titlist to a full titlist, although Mayweather holds two of the major belts in the division while Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs), a 30-year-old Cuban defector living in Houston, owns a secondary version.

"Canelo thinks Floyd is the champion. Floyd beat Canelo and Canelo thinks Floyd is the champion, so how can Lara be a champion," Schaefer said. "So Canelo doesn't want it for a title so it won't be a title fight, but if Lara wants to defend the title he can pay the sanction fees. But Canelo said he doesn't want to fight for the title."

Right. Why pay money out of your earnings just so you can be the "regular" WBA champion, with Floyd still out there as the WBA Super champion?

It's just a way for the WBA to try and double the money they get from sanctioning fees. I'm glad Canelo is telling them to take a hike.

I just laugh when people defend these belts, and call boxing a sport...

This proves that boxing is nothing more than entertainment,,, fighters are wising up, and it's pretty sad when titles are meaningless and fighters would rather not have them...
