That's what is sounds like to me. HBO thought that Stevenson had no viable alternatives and so they played hardball with him. That's when Showtime entered into the picture with a better deal.

Even at that point HBO still could have matched their offer. But they chose not to.

The way I look at it is that HBO still has Kovalev, and guess what he's just as big of a star as Stevenson. Stevenson just wants bank to fight Fonfara.

True but what opponents are left for him to fight? Ward will probably wait for GG to move up. Dawson was finished by AS. Pascal maybe but isn't he rept by Haymon too (not sure)?

Perhaps HBO were aware that Haymon was in the picture long before Stevensons actual signing as early stories imply (Haymon fighters tend to get this kinda Stepford thing after their earliest comments, but you can occasionlly glean something before the shutters snap down)?

It doesn't sound like it. HBO was acting as if Stevenson had no other options and had to take whatever they offered him.

I wonder if they felt he had no options because whatever boxing minds they have there thought he would be a fool to fight (and lose to) Hopkins.

Both of which makes no sense, unless you are HBO and Duva. Stevenson should be lucky Haymon stepped in, Yvon was about to get Stevenson screwed out of allot of money. Geesh. As far as Duva is concerned, simply saying you have an agreement that says we agree to make another agreement sometime in the future sounds shady as hell.

I give her props for trying to smear Al Haymon. But she should just accept the fact that he outsmarted her, and HBO for that matter for trying to marginalize Stevensons earning potential. Al Haymon gave HBO the first chance to negotiate and accept the terms for a Stevenson contract. Not only did they decline, the didn't even attempt to negotiate it. HBO probably spoke with Duva and heard her explain how she was low balling and suckering Yvon and Stevenson into accepting it. Her and HBO execs probably laughed all night about how rich they would get by getting two fights out of Stevenson for the price of one. At least until they got news Showtime accepted Haymons deal.
I posted this for a different article earlier this week and turns out there was some truth to what I suspected. LOL

I don't like Stevenson or Kovalev, but this sounds to me like HBO wanted a 3 fight deal and no fight by fight. Adonis wanted better money, which is understandable given his ratings were better than Andre Ward-Edwin Rodriguez which they way overpaid for. HBO probably thought there was no way he'd leave to Showtime, and were wrong.

For the record, I still think Kovalev KO's Adonis.
