What is the goal in boxing?

What is the true goal of modern boxing? A decision or knockout? Im not talking about an individual goal, ones goal might be to win by severely injuring the opponent, but that might not be the goal of the sport in general. Is a knockout considered a side effect, like an obstacle to the usual 12 round fight? Is this sentence correct? The fight is planned for 12 rounds, but in the process, the fighter sometimes falls as a result of blows and cannot get up, so the referee must stop the fight after counting to ten.
This question is too philosophical for one of the oldest 'sports'...Comment

I'm not sure what the goal is yet. I'll have to view a bunch of fights before I can answer that, I am no expert like all you guys are, yet. At first I thought that you were supposed to make the other guy cry, or at least wimper a bit. Then I thought that they were supposed to tear the others guy heart out and stomp it on the floor of the ring. I saw a guy cry but I haven't seen the part about stomping the other guys heart yet. If you guys have a clip of the heart thing than I'd like to see it. From what little I have learned of the sport so far it seems that the object is to punch the other guy in his face more than he punches you in your face, or something like that.
I was hoping that you guys could fill me in on it. I'm about ready to watch my 5th or 6th fight ever. Who's this future hall of famer Charles Zelenoff, I'm eager to view his tremendously touted skills. Anybody got a clip? ....... Rockin'Last edited by Rockin'; 03-26-2014, 01:18 PM.Comment

I understand that the goal is to win and to make money no doubt, but as for the rules of boxing, there is one goal like it is in football/soccer for example, there the goal is to score more goals than your opponent. What about in boxing? As far as i see it, the goal is to outbox your opponent, so you get more points that eventually win you the fight. A knockout is merely a side effect if a fighter cannot finish the fight, or the predicted number of rounds. If a boxer cannot finish the predicted number of rounds, if he is knocked out or incapable to continue(same thing actually), the fight is over early than predicted. A knockout can be sort of a solution. In boxing, the fighter might not always finish the predicted number of rounds, due to the nature of the sport, so the fight is over early and the fighter than got knocked out loses because he has been outboxed. Of curse some boxers are taking advantage of this rule, especially the "big" boxers, because they can finish the fight early and more entertaining to the fans. But as for boxing the knockout is merely a side effect, in which a boxer is too outboxed to continue and complete the predicted number of rounds. Is my assumption correct?Comment

Every boxer have their own purpose of why they decided to go in that squared circle. At its most basic core for each it's to make a living.Comment
