Kovalev-Cleverly was already nearing a done deal while the Hopkins-Murat talks had just started back up. Kovalev had already moved on before Hopkins-Murat became official, probably realizing the mandatory would get the nod considering thats what the IBF was ordering anyhow. The point is that it wasnt a duck, nothing like the stevenson situation, both teams went in differnt directions and Kovalev had no ill will towards Hopkins.

        I'm tired of repeating:

Hopkins would face Kovalev, but ... (6/19/13)

        http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/p...ce-kovalev-but

“For me, it’s a no-brainer,” the 48-year-old Hopkins said. “Kovalev can go get Cleverly, I can probably get Adonis and we go head-to-head (...)"

That backs up my point. In a way... Showtime had no rights for future Kovalev fights so the network really had no interest in buying a Hopkins-Kovalev, not a money fight and if Hopkin loses.. he retires and Kovalev goes back to HBO with much more upside. I see their reasoning behind not being too thrilled meanwhile HBO was absolutely pushing for a Kovalev-Cleverly fight.. for Duva its a no brainer which side to lean on. My point was that GBP or Hopkins didnt duck and it turned out to be a great business move for Kovalev on the network that is actually investing in him.

did they have rights to future murat fights? why are there special circumstances needed to fight good fighters but when you are fighting a bum its anything goes. this is the whole definition of ducking. having 2 separate circumstances depending on who you are fighting.

Murat was orginally the mandatory to Hopkins title, Murat then had visa issues and the fight had to be called off which THEN led to Kovalev becoming the mandatory, Murat was able to resolve his visa issues and then became the mandatory once again.

Showtime did not want to buy the fight, the fault was not on GBP. However Duva had the chance to pursue the Hopkins fight but THEY feared Hopkins would just go and fight Cleverly instead and Kovalev would be left out to dry if he didnt quickly sign for the fight.

              Yeah, sorry.

You can try to spin it any way you want but Hopkins himself said that Sjowtime AND Golden Boy rejected the fight.

Schafer himself said that Kovalev wasn't as well known as Karo Murat. Nuff said

Link? I dont recall him saying GBP rejected. Showtime didnt have rights to Kovalev's future fights so they feared Hopkins getting beat and Kovlev returning to HBO, Thats on Showtime..

Dude.. is it THAT hard to understand? IBF ordered Hopkins to fight his mandatory. Murat was the mandatory and showtime had no interest in the Kovalev fight because hes an HBO fighter.. with much more upside than Murat. HBO was pushing for the Cleverly fight because Kovalev is one of the "five fighters" they planned on pushing when Floyd jumped ship. Kovalev prefered to fight Cleverly, HBO has rights to his fights so why would he jump to showtime especially if he lost to Hopkins when HBO is so heavily invested in him? You're making it seem like the ball was only in Hopkins and GBP court when Kovalev had two options on the table and decided for himself.

The plan HBO had in place was for Kovalev to fight Cleverly, take his belt and then unify with Stevenson in a big fight, obvs that just got derailed.

From the horses mouth, Promoter Yvon Michel:

"After discussions we have decided to pass and we got a better offer Showtime. HBO had the right to match any offers so we sent them a copy. They had until today to match it but have decided otherwise. This was pure business decision for all parties involved, nothing personal or immoral.'

I don't know who you are quoting but, the "Showtime" offer can be completely fake. Not a fake document, but no real intent. How can anyone prove Adonis will actually get more money? Obviously we can't. We shouldn't fall for this nonsense. All we really know is Adonis does not want to fight Sergei. Done. Hopkins was not a big puncher at 160 and 30 years old; he is now 49 years old and fighting at 175. There you go.
