The context is at what point of Ward's career the fight against Kessler took place. Kessler wasn't his career defining victory. The Kessler win was just the beginning of his career. Remember, that he and Dirrell at that time were the two noobs in the tournament and everyone was predicting a Kessler/Arthur Abraham/Carl Froch showdown. And Ward beat all three of them.

And he still has years left to go.
i was having a good day until you said this

Fighters always say the fighter that gave him less of a beating is the better fighter out of all the guys that beat him. They always say something like"

"Well actually, my hardest fight was when that split loss, the one everyone said I won. He punched the hardest and was the fastest. That guy that brutally beat me for four rounds then punched me through the ropes? I just wasn't 100% that night."

calzaghe should have been dq'd in every single fight. 0-46. the reason people say he was so awkward was because boxers aren't used to fighting guys who break the rules constantly. it's a new thing fighting a guy who "punches" side to side instead of forward and back.

Joe would have put an almighty Manfredo-style slapdown on Ward if they ever had fought.

Super 6 vaulted Ward past Calzaghe
Calzaghe closed his career well but wasted way too much time
Kessler did better against Calzaghe so he'd be expected to favor him
but Ward in a pretty short span trumped Calzaghe's resume

What Ward has done at age 30 is marginally better if better at all than what Joe did by age 30.

Ottke didn't come over to America, move up in weight and beat RJJ and BHOP, either did he? One man took chances, the other sits on the sidelines to avoid them (Ward).

                    Super 6:

Froch....should have lost his last fight and will likely retire after the beat down he receives in the rematch.

AA.....revived his career after seemingly being out the door

                    Dirrell....retired

                    Kessler......pretty much retired

So what of all the great contestants from the all mighty "super 6" anyways? None of them have really gone on to do much since the tourney. The guy who won the damn has less momentum in his career than a fricking Tonka toy.

He's bitter about the Ward fight so take it with a grain of salt. He's normally a very respectful guy.
