Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez Says He Knows When To Walk Away

WBC middleweight champion Sergio 'Maravilla' Martinez (52-2-2, 28KOs), 39-years-old, will not continue fighting for much longer. He knows his time in the sport is coming to a close in the near future. He does not want to make the same mistake as other fighters, who continued fighting beyond their best years.

Martinez will defend his title against former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) on June 7th at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Don't run away from GGG. It's the fight the middleweight division wants to see!

I think Sampson Lewkowicz said recently that Martinez will have around three more fights. Whether that includes the Cotto fight, I don't know.

I assume right time to walk away = just before Golovkin gets to him.

He really wants one of them to be Canelo and Mayweather

I think they've moved on from Mayweather Alvarez would be a possibility for the third. Martinez would have to beat Cotto and one other HBO approved opponent. And the only opponent HBO will be approving for Martinez after Cotto is Golovkin. Martinez has said he plans to finish his HBO contract, I believe. So at the very least, he should have one fight after Cotto.

If he fights Rubio next, he could wait and hope GBP and HBO resolve their dispute.

I'm hoping he feels like taking the fast route and doing the GGG fight to finish out the contract.

Given Martinez's level of opposition, and what he and his management team have said, I think he'll fight Golovkin if he beats Cotto. Golovkin will have a bigger name if he beats Chavez Jr. Martinez won't want to be remembered as a fighter who ducked challenges. Fighting Golovkin is the way to silence critics.

It's a pity he bloomed so late as a fighter. He just sorta came from nowhere and gave us so many fantastic fights. I'm hoping he gives us a GGG fight before he goes.
