Well when you lunge forward in stance.. you do so with your back foot... unless you are doing a full step which would change your stance from orthodox to southpaw.. and vice versa..

this lunging step while keeping stance integrity is called the jumpstep. Muscular calves help to add explosiveness when you are pushing off the back foot. Useful in adding maneuverability to your game and momentum to your punch. Also useful catapulting onto a perfect counter right....

They don't "help" him in anything, they are a product of conditioning and also genetics.

Doesn't form tend to follow function? Also tends to be proportional to strength I suppose... Dude carries a ton of momentum, I don't for a second doubt his calves have nothing to do with it (it's not just his calves, it's his legs in general as he does have some quads, etc on him you can see them beasts when he sits). He's like a train when hes running forward. Took superman to posses JMM for a brief second and counter Manny. It's probably also why he can generate good pop even while his footing is not completely there...just raw power from one leg to another that he's able to carry from his momentum and use his powerful legs to stay upright. Dudes with small calves can still punch and be strong of course...

The size of his calves may not make a difference but the strength of his calves absolutely do. The spring Pac has in his straight punches is a lot to do with his calves.

Big calves is definitely a Filipino trait. I had plenty of Filipino friends growing up and they all have big calves.

Calves are one of the most difficult muscles to develop. It mostly comes down to genetics. It can't hurt his footwork and stuff but I doubt it's that he's abnormally dedicated to developing them.

                      Generate power from those calves.

Can you imagine taking a spinning roundhouse of Pacquiao, he'd knock Wlad out with that.
